Stabilization of the estimation of the covariance matrix for the Markowitz portfolio theory

Abstract:

Předkládaná diplomová práce je zaměřena na analýzu stability odhadu kovarianční matice. Odhad kovarianční matice je následně využit v modelu optimálního portfolia v Markowitzově smyslu. Největší důraz byl kladen na to, jak dlouhou časovou řadu zvolit pro odhad kovarianční matice a zda má významný vliv délka historie, ze které je kovarianční matice odhadována, na investici do příslušných aktiv. Analýza byla prováděna pomocí simulovaných a reálných dat v rozsahu let 2006 - 2018. Sada reálných dat pochází z amerických burz NYSE a NASDAQ, bylo voleno 50 společností s nejvyšší tržní kapitalizací. Provedená analýza ukázala, že čím delší je časový horizont, tím menší jsou rozdíly mezi maximálními a minimálními vlastními čísly kovariančních matic a kovarianční matice se stávají stabilnějšími, a také čím delší je časový horizont, tím je investice v případě volby reálných dat výnosnější.

Abstract:

This magister thesis is focused on analysis of stability of covariance matrix estimation. The estimate of covariance matrix is then used in the optimal portfolio model in the Markowitz sense. The greatest emphasis was put on it, how long to take the time series for the covariance matrix estimate and whether the length of history, from which the covariance matrix is estimated, has a significant impact to the investment in the relevant assets. The analysis was conducted using simulated and real data over the period 2006 - 2018. The real data set comes from NYSE and NASDAQ and were elected 50 compenies with the highest market capitalization. The analysis showed that the longer the time horizon is taken, the smaller the differences between the maximum and minimum eigenvalues are and the covariance matrixs are more stable. Further in the case of choosing real data the~longer the time horizon is, the more profitable the investment is.
