Religion and Political Cleavages in Israel and their Impact on the Israeli Party and Political System

Anotace:

Tato disertaní práce se zamuje na problematiku vztahu náboženství a politiky ve Státu Izrael, konkrétnji na vztah židovského náboženství (judaismu) a izraelského stranicko-politického systému. Zámrem textu je analýza konfliktních linií a politických stran, které na základ uvedeného vztahu vznikají, stejn tak jako analýza jejich vlivu na charakter izraelské demokracie. Cílem práce je ovení dvou základních hypotéz: - Izraelská demokracie je díky vlivu specifik judaismu demokracií sui generis, která se v mnoha ohledech odlišuje od demokracií západních, vycházejících z kesanských základ. - Konfliktní linie související s náboženstvím hrají v izraelském stranicko-politickém systému jednu z nejdležitjších rolí. Disertaní práce je rozdlena do pti základních ástí. První obecná ást je vnována konfliktním liniím v izraelské spolenosti s drazem na cleavages související se vztahem náboženství a politiky. Mezi ty patí zejména spor mezi stoupenci sekulárního demokratického státu a teokracie. Pozornost je vnována i dalším konfliktním liniím uvnit izraelské religiózní komunity hlavn rozdíly mezi sefardskými a aškenázskými Židy, ortodoxními a ultraortodoxními Židy (charedim), i konflikty mezi ortodoxními a neortodoxními proudy judaismu. ást druhá pímo navazuje na první kapitolu a podrobn se zabývá produktem konfliktních linií souvisejících s náboženstvím religiózními politickými stranami a hnutími. Podrobn se zabývám izraelskými politickými subjekty souvisejícími s religiozitou: od stran nesionistických (koalice aškenázských ultraortodoxních stran Jahadut Ha-Tora, jejímž stedobodem je strana Agudat Jisrael) pes sefardskou religiózní stranu Šas až po Mafdal (Národní náboženskou stranu, což je politická formace náboženských sionist, zvlášt židovských osadník) a umírnnou ortodoxní stranu Meimad. Tetí ást je vnována nkterým dležitým aspektm vztahu izraelské demokracie k náboženství. Zde poukazuji na skutenost, že vztah mezi tmito dvma hodnotovými systémy není ani po více než plstoletí existence Izraele vyjasnn. V dsledku existence paralelního svtského a náboženského právního systému ovlivující otázky osobního statusu, šabatových a potravinových omezení apod., dochází v izraelské spolenosti k vzájemné polarizaci skupin obyvatelstva. ást tvrtá pojednává o struktue židovské spolenosti z hlediska religiozity. Pro tu je píznaná nezvyklá rznorodost, a to jak z hlediska vnitroetnického, kulturního, náboženského, tak i z hlediska šíe politických názor. Pátá ást je vnována radikálním politickým formacím, které se o interpretaci (respektive dezinterpretaci) judaismu snaží opít svoji politiku. Charakteristická je pro n neochota k jakýmkoli územním ústupkm ze strany Izraele, militantnost vi Arabm a interpretace judaismu, která preferuje izolacionismus, expanzionismus a teorii národní výjimenosti. adím sem hlavn strany Techija, Kach, Moledet a osadnické religiózní hnutí Guš Emunim. Radikalismus radikáln pravicových subjekt vedl v nkterých pípadech k terorismu. Ten se mimo jiné podílel na tom, že se prostednictvím Hebronského masakru v roce 1994 a vražd izraelského premiéra Jicchaka Rabina (1995), podailo radikálm pispt ke zvratu úspšn se rozvíjejícího mírového procesu.

Abstract:

This dissertation is aimed at issues in the relationship between religion and politics in the State of Israel and the relationship between the Jewish religion (Judaism) and in particular the Israeli party and political system. The main goal of this text is to analyze the political cleavages and political parties which emerged on the basis of the mentioned relationship and to analyze their impact on the nature of Israeli democracy. This dissertation wants to prove two main hypotheses: - Due to the influence of special attributes of Judaism, it is possible to characterize Israelis democracy as democracy sui generis. From many points of view it differs from Western democracies which originated from Christian roots. - Political cleavages in Israel which are connected with religion play a significant role in the Israeli party and political system. This dissertation consists of five main parts: The first introductory part is aimed at the role of political cleavages with emphasis on religious cleavages secular state vs. theocracy, orthodox vs. ultra-orthodox Jews, Sephardi Jews vs. Ashkenazi Jews and Orthodox Judaism vs. non-orthodox Judaism. The second part gives a detailed description of those political parties and movements which emerged on the basis of the mentioned cleavages and which incorporate religious elements into their policy. It began with the Sephardim religious party Shas to the Ashkenazim ultra-orthodox non-Zionist parties (the coalition of the parties Yahadut Ha-Torah with its centre in the party Agudat Yisrael). Then the author investigates the Mafdal (National Religious Party NRP), i.e. the party of the religious Zionists, especially of the Jewish settlers, and the moderate orthodox party Meimad. The third part considers the Israeli democracy and its attitude towards religion. Here the author shows that even after more than half a century of existence the State of Israel, the interrelation between these two systems of values has not yet been clarified. One aspect of this problem lies in the fact that while the majority of Israelis today still try to build and organize a liberal pluralist country in which people of all religious denominations can take part, a considerably smaller but rapidly growing group of adherents of the orthodox currents of Judaism try to introduce into their country a way of life which would be completely regulated by a narrow interpretation of Halacha the traditional Jewish religious law. In part four The Israeli Society and Religiosity the author investigates in detail the structure of Israeli-Jewish society from the religious point of view. The Israeli-Jewish population has one idiosyncratic trait: it is an extraordinarily manifold society from the point of view of the ethnical origin of the citizens; their culture; their religion; and last but not least from the point of view of the broad spectrum of their political opinions. The most contradictory role on the Israeli political stage is the radical right: the exclusive subject of the last part of this dissertation. Although the main part of the radical right is very strongly connected with religion, nevertheless these right-wing groupings cannot be characterized as exclusively religious. What is distinct for them is a reluctance to any territorial concessions from the part of Israel, a militant attitude towards Arabs, and an interpretation (or rather misinterpretation) of Judaism that prefers dogmatism, isolationism, expansionism, and the theory of national exceptionality as the case may be. In the opinion of the author the parties Tehiya, Kach, Moledet and the religious movement of the settlers Gush Emunim belong to these rightist groupings. Radicalism of the radical right-wing political subjects resulted in some cases in terrorism. This has its roots in the period before the establishment of the State of Israel when the Jewish radicals fought against the Arabs and the British.
