Reproductive efficiency of cairn terrier bitches

Abstract:

Souhrn Jednou ze změn, které nastaly po domestikaci psů před cca 14 tisíci lety, je i změna v reprodukčním cyklu a reprodukci. Na rozdíl od vlků, mají dnešní feny během roku dvě až tři estrická období a samci jsou plodní po celý rok. Ač existují meziplemenné rozdíly, obecně jsou feny považovány za nesezónní samice. Cílem této studie je ověřit, zda faktory jako je počet sourozenců matky, měsíc porodu, teritorialita, věk feny a pořadí vrhu ovlivňují velikost vrhu u plemene cairn terrier. Do studie bylo zařazeno celkem 2.328 vrhů registrovaných ve třech zemích (Finsko 2.036, Česká republika 186, Slovensko 106) z let 1987-2014. Pro zpracování dat byla brána v potaz jen zapsaná štěňata, neboť celkový počet narozených štěňat, tj. vč. mrtvě narozených a po porodu uhynulých štěňat, není v Plemenných knihách sledován. Celkový průměrný počet štěňat ve vrhu byl 3,8 (Finsko 3,9, Česká republika 2,9, Slovensko 4,2). Ze zpracovaných dat, která byla z příslušných Plemenných knih k dispozici, bylo zjištěno, že velikost vrhu významně ovlivňuje počet sourozenců matky, tj. velikost vrhu, ve kterém byla matka narozena, věk feny a pořadí vrhu. Nebyl pozorován žádný vliv měsíce roku, ve kterém se štěňata narodila na počet štěňat ve vrhu. Nicméně byla zjištěná určitá estrická sezónnost samic s jarním a podzimním vrcholem v měsících březen a květen, resp. září a říjen. Data byla zpracována v programu Statistica (verze 12, StatSoft, ČZU) metodou ANOVA a dále podrobněji Schéffeho testem.

Abstract:

Summary A modification in the reproductive cycle and in the reproduction itself is one of changes which have occurred after the domestication of canines about 14 thousand years ago. On the contrary to wolves, current bitches have from two to three estrous cycles and males are fertile during the whole year. Even though differences between particular dog breeds exist, bitches are not counted to be seasonal females. A verification of potential impact of various factors like a number of mother's siblings, date of a litter delivery, a territoriality, an age of a bitch, and a succession of a litter on a Cairn Terrier breed litter size is the subject of the study. 2.328 litters registered in three countries (2.036 from Finland, 186 from the Czech Republic and 106 from Slovakia) in the period of 1987 - 2014 were included. Only registered puppies were taken into account since a quantity of puppies in particular litters including stillborn puppies and an early neonatal mortality is not recorded in studbooks. The overall average number of puppies in a litter was 3,8 (3,9 in Finland, 2,9 in the Czech Republic and 4,2 in Slovakia). Based on the analysis of data gathered from studbooks, it was realized, that the litter size is significantly affected by a number of mother's siblings (i.e. size of the litter which was the mother born in), age of the bitch and succession of a litter. No influence of the month of the litter on the litter size was encountered. Nevertheless, certain seasonality of bitches with the spring estrus season in March and May and the autumn one in September and October was observed. Data was processed with the use of software Statistica (version 12, StatSoft, ČZU) using the ANOVA method, and by the Schéffe test subsequently.
