John Locke and his liberal thought

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje Johnu Lockovi a jeho liberálnímu myšlení. Cílem práce je zjistit, které Lockovy myšlenky pokládáme za liberální. První část práce se zabývá informacemi o Johnu Lockovi, týkající se jeho života, děl a vlivu. Druhá část práce je zaměřena na jeho dvě díla, a to "Dvě pojednání o vládě" a "Dopis o toleranci". V těchto dílech jsme analyzovali Lockovi liberální myšlenky a další prvky spojené s touto problematikou. Jeho liberální myšlení je založeno na ideji společenské smlouvy, která má ochraňovat právo na život, svobodu a majetek. Locke konstatoval, že vláda má být podřízena zákonům, vytvořené společností a nikdo nemůže vládnout bez souhlasu "poddaných". Zastával myšlenku, že všichni lidé jsou si rovni před zákonem a ctí práva druhého. Převážně tyto teorie pokládáme za liberální a staly se základem pro přijetí Listiny základních práv a svobod. Třetí část práce se zaobírá pojmem liberalismus a odpovídá na otázku, proč je John Locke považován za liberála. Závěrečná část práce obsahuje shrnutí zjištěných faktů o Johnu Lockovi a výsledky analýzy o jeho liberálním myšlení.

Abstract:

My bachelor thesis deals with John Locke and his liberal thinking. The aim is to find out which of Locke's thoughts are considered as liberal. The first part of my thesis deals with the information about John Locke's life, works and his influence. The second part of my thesis focuses on two pieces of Lock's work, these are "Two Treatises of Government" and "Epistola de Tolerantia". In these we analysed Locke's liberal ideas, and other aspects related to this issue. His liberal thinking is based on the idea of social contract protecting the right to life, liberty and property. Locked stated that the government is to be governed by the laws created by society and no-one can govern without the consent of the "subjects". He held the idea that all people are equal before the law and respect the rights of others. Mainly these theories are considered as liberal and laid the foundations for the adoption of the Charter of Fundamental Rights and Liberties. The third part of my thesis deals with the concept of liberalism and answers the question, why John Locke is considered to be a liberal. The final part contains a summary of the ascertained facts about John Locke and the results of the analysis of his liberal thinking.
