Hidden champions among family businesses: analysis of Margarete Steiff GmbH

Abstract:

Kategorie rodinných firem a malých a středně velkých podniků se do velké míry překrývají a jejich hranice nejsou jasně definovány. Stejně tak Mittelstand, pojem specifický pro německou ekonomiku, není jednoznačně kvantitativně definován a spočívá spíše v kvalitativních aspektech. Mezi rodinnými podniky a zástupci Mittelstandu jsou vysoce výkonné společnosti, které jsou ve svém odvětví světovými lídry; tzv. skrytí šampioni. Cílem práce je analýza společnosti Margarete Steiff GmbH pro zjištění, zda splňuje znaky pro zařazení do kategorie skrytých šampionů. Za tímto účelem bylo také provedeno šetření zaměřené na znalost značky Steiff mezi německými a českými rodiči, z nichž vyplynulo, že společnost Steiff je šampionem ve svém odvětví, na německém trhu je však její znalost vysoká, proto nelze s určitostí tvrdit, že by byla skrytým šampionem. Práce je východiskem pro další zkoumání oblasti skrytých šampionů, například na českém trhu, a jejich popularity mimo domácí trhy.

Abstract:

The categories of family businesses and small and middle-sized businesses significantly overlap and there are no distinct borders between them. Just like with Mittelstand, a German-economy-specific term, is not to be specifically defined with quantitative factors; rather through qualitative aspects. Among family and Mittelstand businesses, there are companies that are world leaders in their respective fields, called hidden champions. The aim of this thesis is to analyse Margarete Steiff GmbH to find out whether it meets the criteria of a hidden champion. For that, a knowledge-based research was carried out among German and Czech parents, which showed that Steiff is a champion in its field, but its knowledge is high in the German market, so it cannot be pronounced a hidden champion there. The thesis is a starting point for further exploration of the area of hidden champions, for example on the Czech market, and their popularity outside their domestic markets.
