Error Metric for Glucose Level Calculation

Abstract:

Diabetes mellitus, česky úplavice cukrová, je velmi rozšírřné nevyléčitelné autoimunitní onemocnění, které postihuje 8.3 % světové populace. Původem nemoci je buď nefunkčnost slinivky břišní, která produkuje málo inzulínu, nebo když je produkován a tělo na něj nereaguje. Při tomto onemocnění je nutné přesné dávkování inzulínu, aby se předešlo závažným komplikacím. Tato práce se zabývá diabetem prvního typu, kde si pacient dávkuje inzulín podle samoměření krve a podle toho, co jedl nebo jak se cítí,. Při velmi pokročilém rozvoji nemoci má inzulínovou pumpu, která se řídí údaji z přístroje pro kontinuální měření hladiny cukru z podkoží. Je proto nutné nalézt vztah mezi naměřenými hodnotami z podkoží a skutečnou hladinou glukózy v krvi. Aby tento vztah byl naprosto přesný, museli bychom modelovat celé tělo a to pro každého, což zatím není možné, a proto se snažíme nalézt pouze optimální odhad. Tato práce implementuje několik metod, pro predikci koncentrace glukózy v intersticiální tekutině podkoží a rekonstrukci koncentrace glukózy v krvi, dále se zabývá jejich efektivitou a chybovostí.

Abstract:

Diabetes mellitus is an incurable autoimmune disease that affects 8.3 % of the world population. The disease manifests itself mostly as a malfunction causing pancreas to produce too little insulin or none at all, or the insulin might be produced, but the correct response is not triggered by the organism. Therefore a diabetic type-1 patient has to dose insulin as precisely as possible to avoid serious effects which may lead to death. This thesis deals with the first type of diabetes, that is such a case where the patient delivers insulin based on self-assessed measurement of the insulin blood levels, on a daily condition or according to previous food intake. With an advanced development of the disease, the patient starts using an insulin pump which gathers data from a device for continuous glucose levels measurement. It is therefore necessary to find the relationship between the measured values from intersticial fluid and the actual glucose levels in blood. Finding the correct value would require to model all metabolic paths in the entire body individually for each patient, but it'i not possible now, hence we attempt to find the closest estimate instead. This thesis implements a number of methods regarding the prediction of levels in the interstitial fluid of subcutaneous tissue and the reconstruction of blood gluocose levels. The efficiency and errorness of suggested methods are discussed as well.
