Language, Nonsense, and Nature in Lewis Carroll's 'Alice' Books and Their Representation in Film

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na dvě díla Lewise Carrolla, Alenku v říši divů a Za zrcadlem. Jako první se zabývá autorem těchto dvou knih a poskytuje jeho krátký životopis a také komentář k ohlasu, kterého se jeho díla dočkala. Následně jsou v první polovině bakalářské práce postupně probrány tři důležité součásti zmíněných knih. Je to jazyk ve spojení s nesmyslem, násilí a příroda, a znázornění postav obou knih. V prvním oddílu je popsán nesmysl a jeho význam a také příklady jeho použití. Téma je propojeno s otázkou jazyka a bakalářská práce také analyzuje několik jevů týkajících se jazyka. Ve druhém oddílu je hlavním předmětem násilí, jak ze strany zvířecích, tak nezvířecích postav a z velké části také ze strany samotné Alenky. Část tohoto oddílu také hovoří o zvířecích postavách a vlastnostech, které mají společné. V posledním oddílu jsou tématem postavy. Je to Alenka, na kterou je nahlíženo z hlediska původu její postavy, tak i jejích vlastnosti. Poté je poskytnuto několik srovnání, například mezi lidskými a zvířecími postavami nebo mezi muži a ženami. Druhá polovina práce poskytuje náhled na tři filmové adaptace Alenky a zkoumá tři již zmíněné aspekty s ohledem na ony filmy. Vybrané filmy jsou od Jana Švankmajere (1985), Tima Burtona (2010) a Harryho Harrise (1985). Tento oddíl se zabývá hlavně tím, jak každá adaptace zdůrazňuje různé části knihy a jiné naopak vynechává.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on two works by Lewis Carroll, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. To begin with, the author of the two books is looked upon and his short biography is provided as well as a commentary on the reception his works have received. Subsequently, in the first half of the thesis, three important elements of the books are examined. It is language in connection to nonsense, violence and nature, and the character representation in the two books. In the first section, nonsense and its meaning is described and instances of its usage are mentioned. The topic is interconnected with the question of language, and several phenomena concerning language are analysed. In the second section, violence is the major subject of discussion, from the side of the animal and non-animal characters, and largely also from Alice’s part. Part of this section talks about the animal characters and qualities they share. In the final section, the theme is characters. It is Alice, the protagonist, who is analysed with regard to her origin as well as her personal traits. Afterwards, the thesis provides several comparisons, such as the human versus animal characters or females versus males. The second half of this thesis looks at three film adaptations of the Alice books and analyses the three aforementioned elements in connection to the films. The chosen films are by Jan Švankmajer (1985), Tim Burton (2010) and Harry Harris (1985). This section of the thesis mainly looks at how each version highlights different aspect of the literary works and omits others.
