Hegemony and International Stability

Abstract:

Teorii hegemonické stability se od jejího vzniku v polovině 70. let dostalo v oboru mezinárodních vztahů širokého ohlasu. Podle jejích zastánců bude hegemonická mocnost usilovat o vytvoření liberálního ekonomického režimu, protože to bude v jejím zájmu. Kvůli vnitřním charakteristikám režimu ale časem nutně dojde k hegemonovu relativnímu úpadku. Od určitého okamžiku již nebude schopen anebo ochoten režim dále udržovat, což povede k jeho rozkladu. V protikladu k tomu tato práce argumentuje, že pokud bude liberální ekonomický režim trvat dostatečně dlouhou dobu, vzniknou v jeho rámci síly, které samy zajistí jeho přežití.

Abstract:

Since the mid 1970s the hegemonic stability theory obtained wide acceptance in the discipline of international relations. According to its proponents the hegemonic power will establish a liberal economic regime since it will foster hegemon`s own postion. But this regime has internal characteristics that will, after some time, cause hegemon`s relative decline. At a particular moment the hegemonic power will not be either able or willing to maintain the regime any longer, which will lead to its disintegration. This text argues, on the contrary, that if the liberal economic regime lasts sufficiently long time, there will have developed internal skills within the regime that will provide for its maintenance without the need of the hegemon`s power.
