The effect of test question wording on the ability to identify informal reasoning fallacies

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce je zaměřena na oblast komunikačních faulů a jejich identifikaci. Hlavním cílem práce bylo výzkumem ověřit, zda varianta formulace testovací otázky ovlivní úspěšnost rozpoznání argumentačních faulů. Byly otestovány formulace „Je tvrzení problematické?“, „Obsahuje tvrzení logické chyby?“ a „Je fér použít tvrzení v diskusi?“. Výsledky potvrdily, že formulace má signifikantní vliv na úspěšnost identifikace. Formulace ale nemá vliv na konzistenci úspěšnosti odpovědí respondentů s různými charakterovými vlastnostmi, stejně jako zkoumané charakterové vlastnosti nemají vliv na úspěšnost. Oproti předpokladům bylo zjištěno, že formulace má různou silu vlivu v případě jednotlivých kategorií argumentačních faulů. Při testování vlivu sociodemografických faktorů nebyl dokázán statisticky významný vliv. Závěrem byl proveden kvalitativní výzkum s účelem podrobněji rozebrat výsledky a jejich možné příčiny. Tím byly zjištěny doplňující informace ohledně toho, že různé formulace mohou být interpretovaný s různou mírou správnosti. Kromě toho, respondenti potvrdili již existující popisy mechanismů fungování jednotlivých typů argumentačních faulů.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is focused on reasoning fallacies and their identification. Aim of the thesis was to verify whether the formulation of the test question affects the success of identifying argumentative fouls. The formulations "Is the statement problematic?", "Does the statement contain logical errors?" And "Is it fair to use the statement in the discussion?" were tested. The results confirmed that the wording has a significant effect on the success rate of identification. However, the wording does not affect the consistency of the success rate of respondents with different character traits, just as the examined character traits do not affect the success rate. Contrary to assumptions, formulation was found to have different strengths of effect for different categories of argumentative fouls. When testing the influence of sociodemographic factors, no statistically significant effect was shown. Finally, qualitative research was conducted to further discuss the results and their possible causes. This provided additional information as to how different formulations can be interpreted with varying degrees of accuracy. In addition, respondents confirmed pre-existing descriptions of the mechanisms of operation of different types of argumentative fallacies.
