Musical Instruments in the Krünitz Encyclopaedia.

Abstract:

Disertační práce Hudební nástroje v Krünitzově encyklopedii (2 svazky, 317 stran, Brno 2012) se zabývá tématem hudebních nástrojů, respektive organologie v „Oeconomische Encyklopädie“ Johanna Georga Krünitze. Tato encyklopedie čítá 242 svazků a vycházela v Berlíně v letech 1773 až 1858. Téměř souběžně byla přetiskována také v Brně, kde však vydávání zůstalo nedokončeno (129 svazků, 1787–1823). V brněnském vydání, které bylo vzato za podklad výzkumu, lze napočítat 184 hesel týkajících se hudebních nástrojů. Tento pestrý materiál byl roztříděn podle organologických kritérií a v rámci zvolených tříd (chordofony, aerofony, membranofony, idiofony, dále varhany, ostatní nástroje) charakterizován co do četnosti, struktury a obsahu hesel, originality a kvality zpracování. Pro demonstraci typických vlastností a problémů bylo ve speciální kapitole analyzováno heslo „Pianoforte“. Závěrečný oddíl prezentuje kritickou edici veškerých textů (s výjimkou problematiky varhan) vztahujících se v brněnském vydání Krünitzovy encyklopedie k organologii. Celou edici doprovodil editor vlastním českým překladem a obsáhlým komentářem. Práce přetiskuje v příloze všechna originální organologická vyobrazení.

Abstract:

The doctoral dissertation Hudební nástroje v Krünitzově encyklopedii (Musical Instruments in the Krünitz Encyclopaedia, 2 volumes, 317 pages, Brno 2012) is concerned with musical instruments and organology in the “Oeconomische Encyklopädie” of Johann Georg Krünitz. Encompassing 242 volumes, this encyclopaedia was published in Berlin between 1773 and 1858, and almost concurrently also in Brno, where however publication remained incomplete (129 volumes, 1787–1823). The Brno edition, which was taken as the focus of research for this dissertation, has 184 articles pertaining to musical instruments. This diverse material is arranged in the dissertation according to organological criteria and, in the framework of the chosen classes – chordophones, aerophones, membranophones, idiophones, and (treated separately) organs and miscellaneous instruments – characterized as concerns quantity, structure, and content of the articles as well as originality and quality of treatment. Chosen for detailed demonstration of typical traits and problems is the article ‘Pianoforte’, which is analyzed in a special section. The closing part of the dissertation presents a critical edition of texts in the Brno edition of the Krünitz encyclopaedia pertaining to the topic of musical instruments (with the exception of the organ). The editor has accompanied the whole edition with his own Czech translation and with extensive commentary. Included in an appendix to the dissertation are reproductions of all the original organological illustrations.
