When they Spread Their Arms, They Touch the Darkness. Changes in the Priestly Identity in the Czech Catholic Milieu in the 19th and 20th Centuries

Abstract:

Disertační práce se zabývá problematikou proměn kněžské identity v prostředí českého katolicismu v 19. a 20. století. Přestože autor využívá některé impulsy historiografické tradice zkoumající dějiny každodennosti, sociální, kulturní i jazykové diskurzy či závažná generační specifika, metodologickým pilířem práce je přístup biografický s výraznými komparativními rysy. Téma je totiž zkoumáno na příkladu tří českých kněží pocházejících z brněnské diecéze. První z nich, Emanuel Masák (1883–1964), je představen jako umírněný modernista hledající cesty k reformě církve. Druhý, Antonín Ludvík Stříž (1888–1960), reprezentuje část kléru, která ke skutečnosti modernizace zaujala konzervativní postoj a využívala mnohé z podnětů tzv. ultramontánní zbožnosti, silně ovlivněné mariánským kultem a úctou k papežství. Poslední ze tří kněží, Dominik Pecka (1895–1981), obě uvedené perspektivy doplňuje střízlivě konzervativním smýšlením za současné připravenosti promýšlet možnosti nových pastoračních metod, což ho přivedlo k roli charismatického průvodce mladých, propagátora mládežnického a liturgického hnutí a vyhledávaného popularizátora křesťanské nauky i vědeckého poznání. Všechny tři kněze ovšem spojuje potřeba reagovat na probíhající sekularizační procesy, a to především myšlenkou obnovy církve i kněžského povolání.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the changes in the Priestly Identity in the Czech Catholic Milieu in the 19th and 20th Centuries. Since the end of the 19th century, the role of the Catholic Church in the Bohemian lands came to be more and more often challenged due to ongoing secularisation trends. On one hand, the identity of Catholic priests was shaken through this development, but on the other hand, this process brought about an interesting effort to reconsider the role of a priest in modern society. Therefore, the thesis is interested in the reaction of the new generation of priests to this development. These priests were influenced by the school system and the religious education in the late “Austro-Catholicism”, entered the seminary shortly before the war or during wartime and worked as priests in pastoral service predominantly in interwar time, when the new independent state was established. The author of the thesis decided to choose a biographical approach to seek the answers to the previously stated questions and problems. This approach enables a researcher to focus on the stories of priests deeply and to look for the “traces” of the general processes in the specific, particular and individual phenomenons. The author chose three Catholic priests: Emanuel Masák, Antonín Ludvík Stříž, and Dominik Pecka representing different priestly environments with specific identities, spiritualities, models of priesthood and various pastoral methods. But their life stories were connected through the ideal of the priesthood and through the need to respond to the ongoing secularisation process through the idea of the renewal of the Church and the priestly vocation.
