Literature and Poverty: American Fiction from the Civil War to the Beginning of 20th Century

Abstract:

Hlavním tématem této bakalářské práce je postihnout období od občanské války až po začátek dvacátého století v literatuře Spojených států amerických. V této době došlo k přeměně ekonomiky Spojených států amerických z agrární společnosti do průmyslové supervelmoci. Tato přeměna sebou přinesla obrovskou propast mezi bohatstvím a chudobou s ničím co by vyplňovalo prázdný prostor mezi nimi, a právě chudoba lidí žijících v amerických metropolích, která je popsána v dílech soudobých autorů, je hlavním předmětem této práce. V první části bakalářské práce vyjmenovány čtyři hlavní činitele, které umožnily uskutečnění toho jevu a objevují se také v použité literatuře. Druhá část práce je věnována analýze významných děl zabývajících se životem v chudobě v metropolích jakými jsou "Život v hutích" Rebeccy Harding Davisové, Maggie, dítě ulice Stephena Crana, Sestřička Carrie Theodora Dreisera a Džungle Uptona Sinclaira. Dále literatura faktu napsaná soudobými či dnešními autory prostupuje celou bakalářskou prací, aby vysvětlila některé sociální problémy zachycené v analyzované literatuře. V závěru jsou nakonec shrnuta analyzovaná díla a je zde odpovězeno na otázku, zdali existuje mezi autory potencionální spojitost.

Abstract:

The object of this undergraduate thesis is to cover the period of time from the Civil War to the beginning of the twentieth century in literature of the United States of America. During this time the economics of the United States of America underwent the complete transformation from the agrarian nation into the industrial superpower. This transformation brought into the nation an enormous gulf which separated wealth from poverty with almost nothing in between and the poverty of people living in the American metropolises which is depicted in the publications of contemporary authors is the subject matter of this thesis. The first part of the thesis lists the four main factors which have enabled these phenomena to happen and also have been reflected in the literature. In the second part of the thesis, there are analyses of the prominent publications dealing with the life in poverty in the urban metropolises such as Rebecca Harding Davis' "Life in the Iron Mills", Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets, Theodore Dreiser's Sister Carrie and Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Furthermore, the non-fictional publications written by the contemporary and also by the present authors permeated the whole thesis in order to comprehend the social problems delineated in the analyzed literature. Eventually in the conclusion, there is the summarization of the whole analytical part and there is also provided the answer, whether the authors have any potential connection between themselves.
