Maloasijský původ praxe rituální kastrace kněží bohyně Velké Matky a Attida: starodávná tradice, nebo helénistická inovace?

The Anatolian origins of the practise of ritual castracion of the priests of the Great Mother Goddess and Attis: ancient tradition or Hellenistic innovation?

Abstract:

Galli byli kněží kultu bohyně Velké Matky (známé též jako Kybelé) a jejího partnera Attida. Hlavní a nejvýraznější praxí spojenou s galli byla kastrace jako iniciace do jejich kněžské funkce. Náznaky této praxe se objevují již v mýtech o Attidovi v různých verzích, avšak ve většině je konec stejný – dochází ke kastraci Attida (frýžská verze mýtů). Antické prameny rituální kastraci pokládají za maloasijskou praxi a zároveň je na tuto praxi nahlíženo negativně. Bakalářská diplomová práce se zaměří na prozkoumání antických pramenů a na jejich základě se pokusí zjistit, zda je praxe rituální kastrace galli doložitelná již v době archaického nebo klasického Řecka a nejde tudíž o pozdní helénistickou inovaci. V případě, že by analýza pramenů hovořila pro pozdní zavedení této praxe, diplomová práce předloží možná vysvětlení její funkce pro fungování kultu.

Abstract:

The galli were the priests of the cult of the Great Mother Goddess (also known as Cybele) and her partner Attis. The main and most prominent practise associated with the galli was castration as initiation into their priestly function. Hints of this practice already appear in the myths of Attis in various versions, but in most of them the end is the same – castration of Attis (in the Phrygian version of the myths). The ancient sources consider ritual castration as an Anatolian practice and at the same time the practice is viewed negatively. This bachelor’s thesis will examine the ancient sources, and on their basis, will attempt to determine whether the practice of ritual castration of the galli is attested in Archaic or Classical Greece and is therefore a late Hellenistic innovation. In case the analysis of the sources argues for a late introduction of the practice, the thesis will present possible explanations for its function in operation of the cult.
