On Expressing the Participants' Status in Crime Reports in the British Press

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce předkládá výsledky studie týkající se prostředků vyjadřování pozitivního statusu obětí a negativního statusu vrahů ve zprávách o zločinu v britském tisku. Práce je zaměřena na referenční prostředky vyjadřované pomocí nominální fráze a její informativní a evaluativní potenciál, a to jak v seriózním, tak bulvárním britském tisku. Analýza vychází z předpokladu, že určité referenční strategie akcentují některé charakteristiky obětí a vrahů, což umožňuje tyto osoby vzájemně kontrastovat, např. jako dobro a zlo, a rovněž zohledňuje sociální a kulturní aspekty, s jejichž pomocí lze ilustrovat vzájemné propojení jazyka a společnosti. Výsledky studie naznačují, že ačkoli seriózní tisk je zdrženlivější než tisk bulvární, oba typy novin svým čtenářům předkládají nejen informace, ale také určité sociálně determinované postoje a názory a hodnocení sociální reality.

Abstract:

This dissertation presents the results of a study of means used to express the positive status of victims and negative status of killers in crime reports in the British press. The main focus is on the noun phrase and its informative and evaluative potential as it is exploited both in serious and popular British press. The work argues that certain referential and predicational strategies accentuate particular characteristics of victims and killers, who are typically contrasted as ‘good’ and ‘evil’ in this type of newspaper reports. Social and cultural aspects are also taken into account so that the interface between language and society can be explored. The results suggest that although broadsheets are more reticent than tabloids both types of papers present their readers not only with information but also with socially determined views and attitudes and evaluation of social reality.
