The effect of tattoos on doctors on the assessment of their competence and trustworthiness

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá možným vlivem tetování na lékařce na hodnocení její kompetence a důvěryhodnosti. Práce využívá meziskupinový experimentální design. Kromě experimentální manipulace s přítomností tetování se zaměřuje na efekt stereotypů vůči tetovaným a konzervatismu. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 453 osob ve věku 18–43 let. Hypotézy o vlivu tetování nebyly podpořeny. Zjistila jsem, že se hodnocení kompetence a důvěryhodnosti lékařky neodvíjelo od toho, zda měla tetování nebo ne, a zároveň se na hodnocení tetované lékařky neprojevila ani míra stereotypů vůči tetovaným, ani míra konzervatismu.

Abstract:

This paper examines the possible influence of tattoos on a physician's assessment of her competence and trustworthiness. The paper uses a between-groups experimental design. In addition to the experimental manipulation of the presence of tattoos, it focuses on the effect of stereotypes towards tattoos and conservatism. The research sample consisted of 453 individuals aged 18–43. Hypotheses about the effect of tattoos were not supported. I found that the ratings of a physician's competence and trustworthiness did not depend on whether she had tattoos or not, while neither the degree of stereotyping towards tattooed doctors nor the degree of conservatism affected the ratings of tattooed physician.
