An Attempt to Define the Genre of Feature-Length Contemporary Conspiracy Documentary Film

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá v současnosti velmi populárním žánrem konspiračního dokumentárního filmu, jehož počátky se dají vystopovat do první poloviny dvacátého století. Od té doby ale prošel značným vývojem a po události přezdívané „9/11“ se dá hovořit o nové vlně nebo dokonce o renesanci v rámci tohoto žánru, která ale dosud nebyla řádně vědecky zmapována a reflektována. Cílem této práce je tedy vymezení podstaty nových konspiračních dokumentárních filmů a převedení tohoto vymezení do podoby slovníkové definice, která zatím není k nalezení ani na wikipedii. Definice žánru je v této práci produktem funkcionální/komponentové a kvalitativní komparativní analýzy struktury reprezentativních děl, se zvláštním ohledem na audiovizuální stránku a značící a vyprávěcí funkce filmu. Základním zjištěním této práce je to, že žánr současného konspiračního dokumentárního filmu je hybridem mezi dokumentárním filmem a propagandou, který si vypůjčuje také z postupů sci-fi filmu.

Abstract:

This paper is about the genre of feature-length conspiracy documentary film, which is presently very popular. The origin of this genre can be traced back to the first half of the twentieth century. However, since then it went through a significant evolution and after the event nicknamed „9/11“ a new wave appeared, a renaissance even. As of yet this has not been properly scientifically documented and reflected upon. That is why the main goal of this research is to define the nature of the new genre and to transform this definition into a dictionary entry, also because not even wikipedia currently provides such definition. This is accomplished in this paper through the use of functional and qualitative comparative analyses of structural components of representative films. Those analyses focus mainly on audiovisual aspects of film, as well as the functions of signification and story-telling. The basic finding of this research is the observation that the genre of contemporary conspiracy documentary film is a hybrid between documentary and propaganda, borrowing also from sci-fi films.
