Searching for a New Detective Film: (Re-)establishing the Detective Genre in Czechoslovak Cinema, 1948–1954

Abstract:

Tato magisterská práce analyzuje vývoj detektivního filmu v zestátněné československé kinematografii v době pozdního stalinismu (1948–1954), kdy tento žánr tvůrci nové kulturní politiky vnímali jako buržoazní a snažili se jej z filmové produkce vyloučit. Práce volí metodu historické produkční analýzy a zaměřuje se na to, jak tradiční žánrové kategorie ustoupily tematicky definovaným, hierarchicky řazeným „administrativním“ žánrům, s nimiž operovaly centrální plány filmové výroby. Vhled do praxe vývoje a schvalování filmových látek na různých úrovních produkčního systému ale zároveň odhaluje, že rezidua tradičních žánrů v dobovém diskursu přetrvávala a že se ke konci sledovaného období filmová detektivka začala opět emancipovat. Tento proces vylučování, nahrazování a emancipace je rozdělen do tří etap, které zároveň slouží jako vodítko pro členění práce do jednotlivých kapitol.

Abstract:

The aim of this study is to analyze the evolution of the detective (crime) genre in the Czechoslovak film industry in the period of late Stalinism between 1948 and 1954 – a genre that was then viewed as highly problematic due to its perceived Western origin and therefore bourgeois nature – using the method of historical production studies. The examined period is characterized by the type of central planning that is based on a concept of “thematic hierarchy”. This practice resulted in the introduction of “administrative genres” (thematically defined quasi-genres) followed by the elimination of the traditional popular genres (including detective/crime film). Nevertheless, the close analysis of development and approval practices on different levels of the production system showed that the traditional popular genres never entirely disappeared from the production discourse and that they started regaining legitimacy toward the end of the period. The six years (1948–54) can be further divided into three sub-periods, each characterized by a specific approach to the detective film; the sub-periods are also used to structure the thesis into chapters.
