An approach to organizing a sport event through the lens of paradox theory

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce řeší přístup k organizování sportovní události pohledem teorie paradoxu. Na sportovní události lze pohlížet jako na dočasné organizace, které způso-bují napětí a paradoxní situace vyžadující nové postupy při organizování. Cílem práce je průzkum sportovní události pohledem paradoxní teorie a identifikace paradoxů, které jsou specifické pro sportovní odvětví. Pro naplnění cíle byla zvolena metodika práce, která představuje případovou studii. Jedná se o kvalitativní a dlouhodobý typ výzku-mu, který byl proveden na extrémní překážkový závod Jindřichohradecký Lev. Získaná data jsou zpracována pomocí kódování metodou zakotvené teorie. Bylo objeveno 10 paradoxních druhů a jejich proměnlivost v čase. Z teorie paradoxu vychází koncept Tough Love, u kterého bylo zjištěno, že neexistuje obecné pravidlo jeho využívání, ale je zapotřebí tento koncept přizpůsobit kultuře, kterou vedeme nebo se kterou komuni-kujeme. Výsledky práce mají praktický přínos v oblasti sport event management. Dále mají výsledky práce přínos v oblasti paradoxní teorie a konceptu Tough Love.

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the approach to organizing a sporting event through the lens of paradox theory. Sporting events can be viewed as temporary organizations that cause tensions and paradoxical situations that require new approaches to organizing. The aim of this thesis is to explore the sport event through the lens of paradox theory and identify paradoxes that are specific to the sport industry. In order to achieve the objective, the methodology chosen for this thesis is a case study. It is a qualitative and longitudinal type of research that was conducted on the extreme obstacle race Jindřichohradecký Lev. The data obtained is processed by coding using the grounded theory method. Ten paradoxical species and their variability over time were discovered. The paradox theory is based on the concept of Tough Love, for which it was found that there is no general rule for its use, but it is necessary to adapt this concept to the culture we lead or with which we interact. The results of this thesis have practical implications in the field of sport event management. Furthermore, the results of the thesis have a contribution in the field of paradox theory and the concept of Tough Love.
