Imperfect competition and price discrimination in practice

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou vzniku a existence rozdílných cenových hladin pro různé skupiny zákazníků v podmínkách nedokonalé konkurence – tedy projevy takzvané cenové diskriminace. Nejprve popisuje danou problematiku z teoretického pohledu: vysvětluje, co je to trh, spotřebitelský přebytek, jak se liší dokonalá a nedokonalá konkurence, ale především se podrobně zabývá třemi stupni cenové diskriminace a okrajově také příklady jejích dalších projevů. Praktická část pak zkoumá cenovou diskriminaci druhého a třetího stupně v praxi, stejně jako pohled zákazníků na tuto problematiku. Vychází při tom ze třech výzkumů: První z nich se orientuje na cenovou diskriminaci druhého stupně u vybraných maloobchodních řetězců, druhý se zabývá třetím stupněm cenové diskriminace na příkladech veřejně přístupných státních i soukromých hradů v České republice a třetí průzkum monitoruje pohled zákazníků na cenovou diskriminaci. Cílem práce je tedy ověřit na praktických příkladech existenci a význam tohoto ekonomického jevu, analyzovat důvody jeho vzniku a nastínit jeho přínosnost.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the issue of the origin and existence of different price levels for different groups of customers in conditions of imperfect competition - i.e. cases of so-called price discrimination. Firstly, it describes the issue from a theoretical point of view: it explains what the market is and the consumer surplus, as well as showing the difference between perfect and imperfect competition. However, it describes mainly three degrees of price discrimination and shows examples of other manifestations, as well. The practical part of the thesis examines the second and third degree of price discrimination in practice as well as the customer's view on this issue. This part is patterned on three researches: The first of them focuses on second-degree price discrimination at selected retail chains, the second deals with the third degree of price discrimination on examples of publicly available state and private castles in the Czech Republic, and finally the third one monitors customer opinions on price discrimination. The aim of this thesis is to verify practical examples of the existence and importance of this economic phenomenon, to analyze the reasons for its occurrence and to explain its utility.
