Shakespeare Translation and Presentation in the Czech Lands during the Great War

Abstract:

Základem této práce jsou první kapitoly, které se zabývají teorií překladů. Cílem těchto kapitol, je za pomoci relevantní literatury jejímiž autory jsou významní teoretici překladu a divadla, nastínění překladatelského procesu, současného překladatelského úzu a specifik, jaké obnáší překládání dramatického textu. Druhá kapitola se zabývá dvěma konkrétními překlady z období první světové války. Jejich autory jsou Josef Václav Sládek a Antonín Fencl. Část druhé kapitoly je věnována recepci překladů Josefa Václava Sládka, kterého kromě samotného Fencla, kritizovala celá řada dalších osobností. Třetí kapitola této práce je věnována Shakespearovu dramatu Kupec benátský. Právě na Kupci benátském je demonstrován odlišný přístup obou překladatelů. Kromě Sládkova a Fenclova překladu se tato kapitola zabývá i překlady Martina Hilského. Na Hilského překladech je demonstrováno nakolik se za posledních sto let změnil postoj k překládání dramatických děl. Hlavním cílem práce bude komparace shakespearovských překladů Josefa Václava Sládka a Antonína Fencla pomocí teorie stanovené

Abstract:

This thesis deals with Shakespeare translation and reception in the Czech lands during the Great War. In first chapters the theory of translation is introduced and laid as a basis for following comparison. In following chapters two Czech translators from an era of the Great War are introduced. One of them is a famous Czech poet and a writer Josef Václav Sládek, the other is relatively less known actor, director , playwright and entrepreneur Antonín Fencl. Last chapter introduces famous Shakespeare play The Merchant of Venice. Later in the chapter some important monologues from all three Czech versions of The Merchant of Venice are compared and scrutinized. Main goal of this written dissertation if to point out the differences between the translations of three important Czech authors, two of them from the begginning of the twentieth century (Josef Václav Sládek and Antonín Fencl) and one recent (Martin Hilský). The choice of Josef Václav Sládek and Antonín Fencl is obvious, as both translators have been working in the same era, yet both are hugely different. Translations of Martin Hilský are then used to compare how much has the translation consensus developed and changed.
