Problem of Free Will in John Searle

Abstract:

Tato práce se zaměřuje na problematiku svobodné vůle u Johna R. Searla. Nejprve jsou naznačeny tři základní přístupy k tomuto problému determinismus, kompatibilismus a libertarianismus. Práce ukazuje vývoj percepce tohoto problému Searlem a jeho základ v dualismu. Následně tento dualismus překonává biologickým naturalismem, který řeší problém mysli a těla. Dále se zaměřuje na analýzu psychologické úrovně této problematiky obzvláště na analýzu vysvětlení jednání a tzv. zkušenost mezery. Z toho vyvstává nutnost hledat neurobiologický základ svobodné vůle. Searle stanovuje dvě hypotézy, které přenechává pro vědecké zkoumání. První hypotéza slučuje psychologický libertarianismus s neurobiologickým determinismem a druhá psychologický libertarianismus s neurobiologickým determinismem založeným v kvantovém indeterminismu. Poslední část této práce se věnuje kritikám Searlova konceptu konkrétně např. problematice potenciálu připravenosti, kompatibilismu, evolučního argumentu či kvantového indeterminismu.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the problem of free will in John R. Searle. First, it outlines determinism, compatibilism, and libertarianism as the three principal approaches to this problem. The thesis describes the evolution of Searle's conception of this problem, and it shows the problem's foundation in dualism. Subsequently, Searle overcomes dualism by biological naturalism, which solves the mind-body problem. Farther on, it focuses on analyzing the psychological aspect of this matter, especially on analyzing explanations of behavior and explanations of the "experience of gap". This necessitates an inquiry into the neurobiological basis of free will. Searle lays down two hypotheses, which he leaves to scientific review. The first hypothesis unites psychological libertarianism with neurobiological determinism. The second one unites psychological libertarianism with neurobiological libertarianism grounded in quantum indeterminism. Last part of the thesis is devoted to criticism of Searle's conception namely to the topics of, e.g., readiness potential, compatibilism, evolutionary argument, and quantum indeterminism.
