Environmental characteristics of bat hibernacula with increased prevalence of geomycosis

Abstract:

Syndrom bílého nosu je kožní plísňové onemocnění ústící ve vysokou mortalitu netopýrů ve Spojených státech a Kanadě. Od roku 2008 je napadení plísní evidováno také v Evropě, zatím bez masové mortality. Onemocnění je způsobeno chladnomilnou plísní rodu Geomyces, která napadá hibernující netopýry v zimovištích. Každé hibernakulum je charakterizováno mnoha environmentálními faktory, které mohou pozitivně či negativně ovlivňovat výskyt plísně a procento nakažených netopýrů. V rámci práce jsem pomocí vícerozměrné analýzy zjišťovala jednostrannou závislost procenta napadených netopýrů na faktorech charakterizujících zimoviště. Nastudovala jsem si metody vhodné pro analýzu environmentálních dat a následně vybrala odpovídající techniku typu mé úlohy, regresní analýzu. Metodu jsem poté aplikovala na data z ČR od České společnosti pro ochranu netopýrů. Pomocí lineární regrese jsem stanovila nejlepší model popisující vztah mezi faktory a určila jejich míru působení na vysvětlovanou proměnnou. Metoda postupného vkládání odhalila čtyři signifikantní proměnné. Zjistila jsem, že výskyt procenta nakažených netopýrů ovlivňují nejvíce zeměpisné souřadnice, expozice vchodu a přístupnost jeskyní. Větší podíl netopýrů nakažených plísní Geomyces destructans můžeme očekávat při vyšších stupních severní šířky a při vyšších stupních východní délky. U zimovišť, která mají vchod exponován na jih, by mělo být procento napadených netopýrů menší, stejně tak u jeskyň přístupných veřejnosti.

Abstract:

White-nose syndrome is a fungal skin disease resulting in high mortality of bats in the United States and Canada. Since 2008, the fungal infection has been recorded also in Europe, even though there has been no mass mortality observed so far. The disease is caused by cold-growing fungus of the genus Geomyces that attacks hibernating bats in their roosts. Each hibernaculum is characterized by many environmental factors that can positively or negatively influence the occurrence of the fungus and the percentage of infected bats. In this thesis, I have investigated dependency of the percentage of infected bats on conditions characterizing the hibernacula using multivariate analysis. I have studied several methods suitable for analysis of environmental data. Then I have selected one method most appropriate for this particular issue: regression analysis. This method was then applied to data from Czech Bat Conservation Society in CR. Using linear regression; I was able to determine the best model capturing the studied dependency and estimate the degree of influence of any given factor. The stepwise method identified four significant factors. I have concluded that the percentage of infected bats is most affected by geographic coordinates, exposure and accessibility of the cave entrance. In particular, a larger proportion of bats infected with fungus Geomyces destructans is most likely to be found at a place with higher longitude (east) and higher latitude (north). We can expect a smaller percentage of infected bats in hibernacula, which have entrance exposed to the south, as well as in caves open to the public.
