The impact of currency board on the economy of Argentina

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá použitím systému currency board v Argentině. Currency board je systém pevného měnového kurzu, kdy měnový kurz jedné měny je pevně navázán na vývoj měny jiné. V Argentině byl zaveden roku 1991 v rámci tzv. plánu konvertibility, který ustanovil zásadní reformy hospodářské politiky Argentiny v 90. letech 20. století. První kapitola se zabývá teorií měnové kurzu, měnových systémů (se zaměřením na currency board) a inflace. Druhá kapitola popisuje hospodářský vývoj Argentiny od 50. let 20. století až po 80. léta, kdy došlo k největšímu nárůstu inflace. Třetí kapitola se zaměřuje na vývoj v 90. letech 20. století, nástup krize, její vyvrcholení ve státní bankrot a situaci po krizi až do současnosti. V závěru práce jsou syntetizovány získané informace a data a jsou popsány dopady, které systém currency board přinesl na celou ekonomiku Argentiny.

Abstract:

The main goal of this diploma thesis is to analyze the use of the system currency board in Argentina. Currency board is the system of fixed exchange rate -- exchange rate of one currency is tightly bounded to the exchange rate of another currency. In Argentina currency board was established in 1991 as a part of the convertibility plan. This plan brought new economic policy reforms in 1990s to Argentina. The first part is aimed at the theory of exchange rates, monetary systems (especially currency board) and inflation. The second part deals with the economic development of Argentina since 1950s until 1980s (in 1980s the inflation finally increased in the hyperinflation). The third part focuses on the development of Argentinian economy in 1990s, during the economic crisis, the state bankruptcy and the situation after the bankruptcy until today. In the conclusion, all information and data are synthesized and the impact of the use of currency board on the whole economy of Argentina is described.
