The importance of Russian Federation in Syrian civil war

Abstract:

Syrská občanská válka je bezpochyby největším a nejsledovanějším konfliktem za poslední desetiletí. Původně pokojné demonstrace se změnily v ozbrojený konflikt, který trvá již deset let a vyznačuje se velkým počtem aktérů a také velmi dynamickým vývojem. Jedním z nejdůležitějších aktérů je také Ruská federace, která je spojencem současného syrského režimu již více než 50 let. Cílem mé bakalářské práce bylo zjistit, jakou roli hrála Ruská federace v syrské občanské válce v období od roku 2011 do konce roku 2020. Ve své práci jsem se zabýval následujícími otázkami: Jaká byla motivace Ruska angažovat se v syrské občanské válce během výzkumného období? Jaké nástroje zahraniční politiky použilo Rusko k dosažení svých zájmů? Jak přítomnost Ruska v syrské válce ovlivnila konflikt? Čeho Rusko v konfliktu dosáhlo? Můžeme syrskou občanskou válku vnímat jako nový zástupný konflikt mezi Ruskem a Spojenými státy - tedy něco jako "novou studenou válku"? Abych dosáhl daných cílů a odpověděl na výzkumné otázky, analyzoval jsem ruskou zahraniční politiku v Sýrii a poté jsem dospěl k závěru, že na vývoj války měla ze všech zahraničních aktérů nejdůležitější vliv Ruská federace. Důvodem je, že přímý ruský zásah do konfliktu ve prospěch režimu Bašára Asada měl zásadní vliv na rovnováhu sil v syrské občanské válce. Ruská intervence znamenala "game changer", protože posílila postavení režimových a prorežimních sil Bašára Asada. Určitě je možné říci, že Rusko je nejdůležitějším zahraničním aktérem v syrském konfliktu.

Abstract:

The Syrian Civil War is certainly the largest and most observed conflict in the last decade. Originally peaceful demonstrations have turned into an armed conflict that lasts for ten years and it is characterized by a large number of actors and also very dynamic progress. One of the most important actors is also the Russian Federation, which has been an ally of the current Syrian regime for more than 50 years. The objective of my bachelor thesis was to determine what role the Russian Federation played in the Syrian civil war during the period from 2011 until the end of 2020. In my thesis I dealt with the following questions: What was Russia's motivation to engage in the Syrian civil war during the research period? What foreign policy instruments has Russia used to achieve its interests? How Russia's presence in the Syrian war affected the conflict? What has Russia achieved in the conflict? Can we perceive the Syrian civil war as a new proxy war between Russia and the United States - something like the "new Cold War"? In order to achieve the given goals and to answer the research question, I analyzed Russia's foreign policy in Syria and then concluded that the Russian Federation had the most important influence on the progress of the war. The reason is that Russia's direct intervention into the conflict in favour of Bashar Assad's regime had a fundamental influence on the balance of power within the Syrian civil war. Russia´s intervention was a "game changer" since it strengthened the position of the Bashar Assad´s régime and pro-regime forces. Certainly it is possible to say that Russia is the most important foreign actor in the Syrian conflict.
