SOIL AND VEGETATION OF MEADOW WETLANDS (VEGAS) IN THE SOUTH OF THE CHILEAN PATAGONIA

Abstract:

An agricultural area of the XII Region of Magallanes (52°-54° s. l.) is characterized by open landscape with isolated hills and humid to semiarid climate. In terrain depressions with glacial sediments that form an impermeable horizon develops an azonal vegeteation - ?vegas? (?mallines?) ? humid grassy and herbaceous vegetation. The vegas are highly productive communities and serve, among other functions, as pastures for sheep (main economic activity of the region). For their characterization 47 soil profiles (determination of soil type, characterization of physical and chemical properties of main horizons) and corresponding vegetation were described. Prevailing soil types occurring in south Patagonian vegas are histosols, fluvisols and to la esser extent also gleysols. Solonchaks, solonetzs or vertisols can be rarely encountered. There are significant differences between histosols and fluvisols in the content of organic matter and pH, however, there is a considerable variability within each group related to the microrelieve, the hydric regime and the intensity of eploitation. That is why six vegetation types that were delimited within our data-set can not be attributed to a certain soil type. Six vegetation types were: I. Salt marhes, II Azorella wet grasslands, III Caltha marshes, IV Magellanic pastures, V Wet grasslands, VI Tall sedge marshes. The fluvisols prevail under the types I. Salt marhes and II Azorella wet grasslands, whereas histosols predominate under the types IV Magellanic pastures, V Wet grasslands and VI Tall sedge marshes. The most important environmental factors that shape the South Patagonian wetland vegetation are soil pH (the transition from alkaline lacustrine sediments to acidic peaty soils), nutrients (content of nitrogen) and water table level.

Abstract:

Zemědělsky využívaná část XII. Regionu Magallanes (52°-54° j. š.) se vyznačuje otevřenou krajinou s izolovanými vrchy a humidním až polopouštním klimatem. V terénních depresích s glaciálními uloženinami, které tvoří nepropustný horizont, se vyvíjí azonální vegetace ? ?vegas? (?mallines?) ? humidní travinobylinná vegetace. Vegy představují vysoce produktivní společenstva a slouží mj. jako pastviny pro chov ovcí (hlavní ekonomická aktivita v regionu). Pro jejich charakterizaci bylo zpracováno 47 půdních profilů (t.j. byl zjištěn půdní typ, chemické a fyzikální vlastnosti hlavních horizontů) a jim odpovídající vegetace. Převažujícími půdními typy v jihopatagonských vegách jsou histosoly, fluvisoly a v menší míře i gleje. Vzácně je zde možno nalézt solončaky, solonetzy či vertisoly. Mezi histosoly a fluvisoly jsou signifikantní rozdíly v obsahu organické hmoty a pH, nicméně v rámci obou skupin je významná variabilita související s mikroreliéfem, vodním režimem a intenzitou využívání. Proto šest vymezených vegetačních typů není možno přímo přiřadit k určitému půdnímu typu. K šesti vegetačním typů patří: I Slaniska, II Vlhké louky s Azorellou, III Mokřady s Caltha sagittata, IV Magellanské pastviny, V Vlhké louky a VI Mokřady s vysokými ostřicemi. Nejdůležitějšími faktory určujícími vegetaci studovaných jihopatagonských mokřadů jsou pH (přechod od alkalických jezerních sedimentů ke kyselým rašelinným půdám), živiny (obsah dusíku) a výška hladiny podzemní vody.
