Effectiveness of StiFoR therapy in preschool children: Case studies of children with hearing impairment

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá možností využití StiFoR terapie neboli stimulace fonetického repertoáru u dětí se sluchovým postižením, konkrétně u dětí, které jsou bilaterálně kompenzované kochleárními implantáty. Tato práce je rozdělená na dvě části: teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretická část je rozdělená do tří kapitol. První kapitola se zabývá teoretickými východisky, kde jsou popsány pojmy jako komunikace, jazykové roviny, sluchový orgán a jeho anatomie a StiFoR terapie. Druhá kapitola je zaměřena blíže na sluchové postižení, kde je detailně popsaná etiologie a klasifikace sluchového postižení, diagnostika sluchového postižení, specifika ve vývoji jedince se sluchovým postižením a kompenzační pomůcky pro tyto jedince. Součástí poslední kapitoly jsou poruchy komunikace, které jsou typické pro osoby se sluchovým postižením. Popisují se zde také přístupy ke komunikaci a v neposlední řadě logopedická intervence u osob s kochleárními implantáty. Praktická část je zpracována formou kvalitativního výzkumu a obsahuje dvě případové studie. U obou těchto studií byla aplikována StiFoR terapie. Součástí výzkumu byla také tvorba obrázkového materiálu, který je využíván během terapie. Celkem bylo vytvořeno 66 ilustrací ve dvou variantách - barevné a černobílé. Terapie probíhala po dobu dvanácti týdnů a byla součástí logopedické intervence v prostředí mateřské školy pro sluchově postižené. V rámci výzkumu byly zaznamenány pozitivní přínosy ve všech jazykových rovinách. Výsledky případových studií ukazují, že tento typ terapie může mít příznivý efekt pro rozvoj komunikačních dovedností u dětí s kochleárními implantáty.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the possibility of using StiFoR therapy, or stimulation of the phonetic repertoire, in children with hearing impairment, specifically in children who are bilaterally compensated by cochlear implants. This work is divided into two parts: theoretical and practical. The theoretical part is divided into three chapters. The first chapter deals with theoretical foundations, where concepts such as communication, language levels, the auditory organ and its anatomy, and StiFoR therapy are discussed. The second chapter focuses more closely on hearing impairment, where the etiology and classification of hearing impairment are described in detail, the diagnosis of hearing impairment, specifics in the development of individuals with hearing impairment, and compensatory aids for these individuals. The last chapter includes communication disorders that are typical for people with hearing impairment. It also describes approaches to communication and, last but not least, speech therapy intervention in people with cochlear implants. The practical part is processed in the form of qualitative research and contains two case studies. In both of these studies, StiFoR therapy was applied. The research also included the creation of pictorial material that is used during the therapy. A total of 66 illustrations were created in two versions - color and black and white. The therapy took place over a period of twelve weeks and was part of a speech therapy intervention in a kindergarten environment for the hearing impaired. The research recorded positive benefits at all language levels. The results of the case studies show that this type of therapy can have a positive effect on the development of communication skills in children with cochlear implants.
