Indigenous Peoples and Environment: Australia versus North America

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat dopad životního prostředí na vývoj kultury. Tento průzkum se soustřeďuje na porovnání podmínek životních prostředí, ve kterých domorodci Austrálie a Severní Ameriky před příchodem Evropanů žili a byli jimi ovlivňováni. První lidé, kteří se usadili v Austrálii a Severní Americe, sem přišli zhruba před 40,000 - 60,000 lety, v době, kdy ještě všichni lidé na Zemi, včetně nich, byli lovci a sběrači. Po oteplení klimatu na konci pleistocénu se v Americe vytvořily příhodné podmínky pro pěstování rostlin. Domorodci žijící v Severní Americe začali objevovat různé druhy rostlin vhodné k pěstování a díky svému životnímu prostředí změnili svůj způsob života a hospodaření. Stali se hlavně zemědělci a tím se výrazně zvýšila jejich populace a hustota obyvatel. Také, a to převážně díky svým obdělaným polím a blízkým vesnicím, výrazně změnili ráz krajiny a své životní prostředí maximálně přizpůsobili svému životnímu stylu a potřebám. Se zemědělstvím, které dokáže uživit větší populaci lidí na menším území, protože umožňuje skladovat plodiny a tím hromadit majetek, přichází vlastnictví a moc. Jsou i výjimky, kde životní prostředí je tak bohaté, že je schopno uživit velké kolonie lovců a sběračů, tak jako u domorodých národů s nejvýraznější hierarchií žijících na severozápadním pobřeží Severní Ameriky. Naproti tomu takové vhodné klimatické a životní podmínky v Austrálii nebyly, tudíž pro Austrálce byly nejvýhodnějšími způsoby obživy lovení zvěře, sběr divokých plodů a rybolov, což se za tisíciletí nezměnilo. Navíc na svém životním prostředí zanechali téměř nepostřehnutelné stopy. Svým podmínkám a únosné kapacitě ekosystému byli nuceni přizpůsobovat i své počty obyvatel. Teploty neumožňovaly shromažďování potravin, tudíž lidé zůstali lovci a sběrači s rovným přístupem k produktům obživy. Součást života domorodců obou kontinentů byla víra, která určovala jejich denní režim, a též vysvětlovala jejich životní styl a vztah k jejich životnímu prostředí.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to examine the impact of the environment on the development of cultures. The survey compares conditions in which Australian Aborigines and Native North Americans lived and interacted with their environment prior to the first European contact. The first people of Australia and North America arrived in the continents about 40,000 – 60,000 BP. The whole world was populated by hunter-gatherers at that time. As the climate became warmer at the end of Pleistocene, the conditions in America turned to be favorable for domestication of plants. Native Americans discovered wild plants suitable for cultivation and, owning it to their environment, changed their lifestyle and economy. They became mainly agriculturalists, which influenced both, population and density. Moreover, mostly for their fields and villages close by, they noticeably changed the landscape and adjusted their environment to their needs. Thanks to agriculture it was possible to sustain more people in a smaller area; and because of hoarded food and accumulated wealth, the ownership and power of individuals came into play. There were some exceptions; the environments rich in nutrition were capable of sustaining large hierarchical communities of hunters, gatherers and fishermen on the Northwest Coast of North America. On the other hand, neither of these climatic and environmental conditions were present in Australia; therefore, for Aborigines the most efficient adaptation was hunting, gathering and fishing. Their lifestyle did not change over millennia and by their activity they left almost invisible traces on their environment. Furthermore, they had to adjust the number of population to carrying capacity of the environment and kept it low. The temperature of Australia enabled to store food, thus Aborigines remained hunter-gatherers with equal access to natural resources. Moreover, beliefs of Indigenous peoples were life-orientated; therefore, they focused on the explanation of their lifeways and their closeness to the environment.
