Analysis of crime and migration in the Czech republic

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je zhodnotit vliv míry kriminality na migraci obyvatel v České republice. K tomuto účelu jsou využita panelová data shromážděná z dat Českého statistického úřadu týkající se jednotlivých krajů České republiky v 10 letém časovém období od roku 2005 do roku 2014. Vzniklý data set obsahuje 140 pozorování. K testování tohoto modelu je využito metody fixních efektů. V teoretické části je obecně popsána problematika migrace a vývoj jednotlivých modelů zabývajících se objasněním faktorů, které migraci ovlivňují, se zaměřením na neoklasickou ekonomii migrace, kterou ekonometrický model rozšiřuje o faktor kriminality. V praktické části jsou odhadnuty modely zkoumající vliv násilné a majetkové kriminality jak na migraci v rámci krajů ČR, tak na vnější imigraci do ČR. Výsledky naznačují negativní vliv obou druhů trestných činů na migraci vnitřní. Při zkoumání vlivu kriminality na emigraci z krajů ČR se potvrdil vyšší negativní vliv násilných trestných činů oproti majetkovým trestným činům. Imigrace do krajů je naopak více ovlivněna majetkovou kriminalitou. V modelu vnější emigrace se vliv míry kriminality nepotvrdil u žádného druhu trestných činů. Tato diplomová práce se pokouší odhalit vztah mezi proměnnými, pro který v současné době neexistuje ucelená teorie.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the impact of the crime rate on population migration in the Czech Republic. For this purpose, panel data collected from the Czech Statistical Office on the individual regions of the Czech Republic in the 10-year period from 2005 to 2014 are used. The data set contains 140 observations. To test this the model method of fixed effects is used. The theoretical part generally describes the issues of migration and the evolution of the models concerned in clarifying the factors that influence migration. This section focuses on the neoclassical economics of migration and expands it by a factor of crime. In the practical part, models to assess the effects of violent and property crime on migration within the Czech regions and external immigration to the country are estimated. The results show the negative effects of the two types of crimes on internal migration. While examining the impact of crime on the emigration of Czech regions a higher negative impact of violent crimes than property crimes was confirmed. On the other hand, immigration to the regions is more affected by property crime. In the model of external emigration, the effect of crime rate has not been confirmed for any kind of crime. This thesis attempts to reveal the relationship between the variables with no theoretical background.
