Urban remembering: interpretation of cultural memory in Brno

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is concerned in its two main levels on the theoretical cross-section of scholar literature focused on the problems of iniciation and representation of memory in urban space as one and the second level is case interpretation of cultural phenomena and visual icons of Brno‘s memory. The result of critical analysis focused on the politics of memory is very disputable ability to understand the meanings of civic discussions and tendencies about remembering. Thinking about past and its actual interpretation is at most of the people bond at certain spots in memory. Therefore in cases of collision with power affairs trying for narrate or physical distortion of these spots, commited civil actions tend to arise. It shows if society is being connected only with governmental narrate „from the top“ or with felt solidarity of memory and values for presence coming from this memory. Interpretation of memory of Brno epistemologically uses Bartmanski’s theory of nostalgia which interconnects currently digested socially-cultural system with qualities of no longer existing reality. Features of nostalgia for age of the first Czechoslovak republic are being manifested in Brno. These continual bridges are being created through iconic power of objects such as Vila Tugendhat, Café Savoy and others which those nostalgical values semantically internalize and further dialogically display. There has been also uncovering and interpreting voids in a cultural narrate of Brno and its battles of symbolical dominance over a public space.

Abstract:

Práca sa vo svojich dvoch hlavných rovinách zameriava na teoretický prierez odbornou literatúrou v probléme podnecovania a reprezentácie pamäti v urbánnom priestore a na prípadovú interpretáciu kultúrnych fenoménov a materiálno-vizuálnych ikon pamäti Brna. Výsledkom kritickej analýzy politiky pamäti je veľmi diskutabilná schopnosť politikov porozumieť významom občianskych diskusií a tendencií ohľadne spomínania. Premýšľanie o minulosti a jej interpretácia sa u ľudí väčšinou viaže na miesta pamäti. Preto v prípadoch stretu so záujmami moci, snažiacej sa aj o naratívne či fyzické pretvorenie týchto miest, vznikajú angažované občianske akcie. Vyjavuje sa takto to, či je spoločnosť spájaná len mocenským naratívom „zhora“, alebo preciťovanou solidaritou pamäti a hodnotami z nej plynúcimi pre súčasnosť. Interpretácia pamäti Brna epistemologicky využíva Bartmanskeho teóriu nostalgie, ktorá prepája aktuálne zažívaný sociálno-kultúrny systém s kvalitami už neexistujúcej reality. V Brne sa prejavujú rysy nostalgie za obdobím prvej Československej republiky. Tieto kontinuálne mosty sú utvárané prostredníctvom ikonickej sily objektov ako Vila Tugendhat, Café Savoy a ďalšie, ktoré ony nostalgické hodnoty sémanticky internalizujú a ďalej dialogicky zobrazujú. Taktiež sú ale odkrývané a interpretované trhliny v kultúrnom naratíve Brna a súboje o symbolickú dominanciu nad verejným priestorom.
