Padmasambhava: Legends and Iconography

Abstract:

Tibetský buddhistický panteon v sobě obsahuje množství osob, které v něm původně nebyly. Tyto osobnosti, bohové, démoni i zbožštění lidé jsou zobrazováni v mnoha podobách a váže se k nim nesčetné množství legend. Jedním z jeho členů je i Padmasambhava – indický tantrický učenec, u kterého není tak zcela jisté, zda skutečně žil, ale jehož legendární životopis je o to bohatší. Je to dáno jeho významem a postavením v celém tibetském náboženství a ikonografii. Tato práce ve třech částech mapuje jeho život, legendy, které se o něm tradují a způsob ikonografického zpracování jeho osoby. Padmasambhavův legendární životopis je velmi podobný životopisu Buddhy Šákjamuniho. Zázračně se zrodil na květu lotosu uprostřed jezera v zemi Orgjän jako emanace buddhy Amitábhy. Ujal se ho král Indrabódhi a nějakou dobu žil jako princ, oženil se, ale později se vydal na duchovní cestu. Cestoval a meditoval a postupně získával další zasvěcení. Přijal pozvání Thisong Decäna do Tibetu, kde pomohl postavit klášter v Samjä a přemohl a začlenil do buddhistického panteonu množství místních původních božstev. Pro budoucí generace ukryl za pomoci Ješe Cchogjal – jedné ze svých partnerek - množství termických textů zahrnující mimo jiné známou Tibetskou knihu mrtvých. Padmasambhavovy skutky jsou zaznamenány v četném množství legend, které jsou rozděleny chronologicky, mezníkem je příchod do Tibetu. Z nepřeberného množství jsou vybrány takové příklady, které dobře ilustrují jeho působení. Padmasambvaha se objevil v množství různých podob, nejčastěji je zobrazován v osmi z nich. Jde o šest pokojných a dvě hněvivé podoby ztělesňující jeho učení. Podrobně popsána jsou tři vyobrazení zdaleka nejrozšířenější stejnojmenné Padmasambhavovy podoby.

Abstract:

Tibetan Buddhist pantheon includes a big amount of personalities that originally did not belong into it. These individualities, gods, demons and divine people are usually pictured in many forms and countless legends accompany them. One of the members of the pantheon is also Padmasambhava – Indian tantra scholar who is not quite certain to have lived but his legendary CV is much richer. It is because of his meaning and position in all Tibetan religion and iconography. This work, divided into three parts, looks at his life, legends about him and it also looks at the way of iconographic processing of him himself. Padmasambhava´s legendary CV is very similar to that of Buddha Shakjamuni. He was born miraculously on the lotus flower in the middle of a lake in the country of Urgyan as an emanation of Buddha Amitábha. King Indrabodhi took care of him and for some time he was living like a prince, he got married but later he started on a spiritual way. He used to travel and meditated and gradually he got further initiations. He accepted the invitation of Tri Songdetsen to visit Tibet where he help to build a monastery in Samye and he defeated many local gods and embodied them into the Buddhist pantheon. With the help of Yeshe Tsogyal he had hidden a lot of termic texts which among others included also well-known Tibetan Book of the Dead. Padmasambhava´s acts can be found in meny legends, which are in chronological order and the arrival in Tibet is the milestone. There are many examples but I chose those ones which give a good picture about his impact. Padmasambhava had appeared in many different forms and shapes but mostly only eight of them are beeing depicted – six of them are peaceful and two are wrathful forms personifying his theories. Three pictures of the most expanded Padmasambhava´s form is beeing described in details.
