Independent digital games from the perspective of feminist theories

Abstract:

The work focuses on gender analysis of female heroines in independent digital games. As most research so far has focused on big-budget production, it uses existing theories to disclose if they can be applied to independent production, and observes whether digital games confirm or refute gender stereotypes. The analysis itself examines representation of heroines through the audiovisual, narrative, and interactive components of the game itself. The work attempts to find out whether digital games as a medium, which is associated primarily with male audiences, can contribute to feminist discourse.

Abstract:

Práca sa zameriava na genderovú analýzu ženských hrdiniek v nezávislých digitálnych hrách. Nakoľko väčšina výskumov sa doteraz venovala veľkorozpočtovej tvorbe, využíva už existujúce teórie a zisťuje, či sú uplatniteľné aj v rámci nezávislej tvorby a všíma si či digitálne hry potvrdzujú alebo naopak vyvracajú genderové stereotypy. V samotnej analýze skúma reprezentáciu ženských hrdiniek cez audiovizuálnu, naratívnu, aj interaktívnu zložku samotnej hry. Práca sa tak snaží zistiť či digitálne hry ako médium, ktoré sa spája predovšetkým s mužským publikom, môže prispievať feministickému diskurzu.
