Repatriation of atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) in Kamenice river

Abstract:

Losos obecný (Salmo salar), byl v minulosti v našich řekách hojně zastoupenou rybou. Následkem mnohých negativních vlivů však v průběhu minulého století z části svého geografického areálu (kontinentální Evropa) vymizel. Proto koncem 20. století začaly pokusy o návrat lososa také do povodí Labe. Česká republika se ke snaze o tzv. repatriaci lososa připojila v roce 1998. Tato ochranářská aktivita dodnes pokračuje již jen v povodí řeky Kamenice jako jediného povodí, kde lze pozorovat pravidelný výskyt navracejících se dospělých ryb v době reprodukce. Cílem této práce bylo sumarizovat rybářské statistiky zahrnující vysazování lososa a na základě odhadovaného počtu navracejících se dospělých ryb zhodnotit dosavadní úspěchy repatriačního programu lososa na území Národního parku České Švýcarsko. Od r. 1998 do 2022 bylo v dolním úseku toku Kamenice vysazeno celkem cca. 2,5 mil. ks lososa především v kategorii plůdek. Intenzita vysazování vykazovala strmě vzrůstající tendenci až do r. 2005, od r. 2006 do současnosti se pohybuje ve výši cca. 110 tis. ks vysazovaného plůdku ročně s tím, že od r. 2022 již pochází 100% vysazovaného plůdku lososa výhradně z inkubačních schránek instalovaných v toku. Starší kategorie lososa (půlroček a roček) jsou vysazovány od r. 2008 v počtu cca. 9,5tis. ks půlročka a 370ks ročka lososa každý rok. První dospělé ryby byly pozorovány již v r. 2001. V r. 2002 byl zaznamenán pravděpodobně nejvyšší počet dospělých exemplářů, od této doby až do současnosti je dokumentován každoroční výskyt lososa v počtu několika jedinců. Intenzita vysazování lososa nekoresponduje s počtem pozorovaných dospělých ryb vracejících se do Kamenice a dosavadní výsledky repatriačního programu tak nejsou považovány za zcela uspokojivé. Pokračováním této práce by měla být kvantifikace faktorů, které velikost populace lososa ovlivňují a v této souvislosti aktualizace managementových opatření.

Abstract:

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) was in the past an abundant fish in our rivers. As a result of many negative influences, however, it disappeared from part of its geographical area (continental Europe) during the last century. Therefore, at the end of the 20th century, attempts were made to return salmon as well to the Elbe river basin. The Czech Republic joined the salmon repatriation effort in 1998. This conservation activity continues to this day only in the Kamenice river as the only basin where you can observe the regular occurrence of returning adult fish during reproduction. The aim of this work was to summarize fisheries statistics in particular salmon stocking and, based on the estimated number of returning adult fish, to evaluate the achievements of the salmon repatriation program in the Bohemian Switzerland National Park. From 1998 to 2022, a total of approx. 2.5 million of salmons as mostly fry, were stocked in dowstream section of the Kamenice river. The intensity of salmon stocking showed a steady increasing tendency until 2005, from 2006 to the present it has varied in the amount of approx. 110 thousand individuals yearly. Since 2022, all salmon fry stocked are resulting from semi-natural egg incubation via instream-installed boxes. Older salmon categories (half yearlings and yearlings) have been stocked since 2008 onwards in the number of approx. 9.5 thousand in half yearlings, 370 individuals of yearling salmon respectively per year. The first adult fish were observed already in 2001, probably the highest number of adult specimens was recorded in 2002, and from this time to the present, the adult salmons occurs rather in few individuals. The intensity of salmon stocking does not seem to correspond to the number of observed adult fish returning to Kamenice, and the results of the repatriation program so far are not considered to be completely satisfactory. To continue of this work includes the quantification of the factors that influence the size of the salmon population and in this context, current management measures should be updated.
