Bathyergid rodents of mesic tropical regions: phylogeography, kinship structure and mating systems

Abstract:

Rypošovití (Bathyergidae) jsou čeleď hlodavců, vyskytující se v subsaharské Africe. Jedná se o striktně podzemní živočichy, kteří opouští systémy podzemních nor jen velmi zřídka. Jejich sociální systém je velmi variabilní a v čeledi se vyskytují jak solitérní, tak sociálně žijící druhy. Solitérní druhy se stýkají jen za účelem rozmnožování, zatímco sociální druhy žijí v rodinách tvořených rozmnožujícím se párem, jejich potomky a případnými cizími imigranty. Podzemní způsob života výrazně komplikuje výzkum biologie této skupiny, zejména v oblastech týkajících se párovacího systému a příbuzenské struktury v rámci populace. Rozvoj molekulárně-genetických metod v posledních desetiletích však umožnil studium těchto jevů i u skrytě žijících organismů. Předložená dizertační práce je zaměřena na studium tří druhů rypošů, rozšířených v mezických oblastech tropické Afriky, odkud dosud řada základních informací chybí. Prvním z nich je rypoš stříbřitý, solitérní druh s velkým areálem rozšíření ve východní Africe. V disertační práci jsem se věnovala genetické struktuře tohoto druhu na několika úrovních. Fylogeografická studie odhalila, že ačkoliv mitochondriální znaky ukazují na výraznou geografickou strukturovanost genetických linií, jaderné znaky naznačují existenci genového toku mezi těmito liniemi. Detailní vnitropopulační analýzou příbuzenské struktury byla odhalena vícenásobná paternita u mláďat z jednoho vrhu a zároveň bylo zjištěno, že samci se kvůli páření pravděpodobně vydávají na zemský povrch a jsou tak schopni navštívit i několik samic. Dalším zkoumaným druhem je sociální rypoš obří, u něhož jsem se zaměřila na párovací systém. Výsledky ukazují na monogamní párování nepříbuzných jedinců. Zároveň byly nalezeny osaměle se vyskytující samice (sestry dominantní samice) v odlehlých částech systému, jež zde pravděpodobně čekaly na svou vlastní reprodukční příležitost. Posledním zkoumaným druhem je sociální rypoš Ansellův, u kterého jsem se soustředila nejen na párovací systém a míru mimopárových paternit, ale i na migraci jedinců mezi jednotlivými rodinami. Ačkoliv existuje relativně rychlá obměna dominantních samců v rodinách, k mimopárovému páření dochází jen velmi zřídka a migrace jedinců mezi rodinami není příliš častá.

Abstract:

African mole-rats (Bathyergidae) represent a family of rodents inhabiting sub-Saharan Africa. They are strictly subterranean creatures, leaving the safety of their underground burrows very rarely. This interesting group of animals involves both solitary and social species. Solitary species interact only for the purpose of reproduction, while the social species live in family groups consisting of the breeding pair, their offspring and potential foreign immigrants. However, their subterranean life makes the research of mole-rat´s biology difficult, mainly when it concerns the mating system and kinship structure of the population. Fortunately, the advance in using the molecular genetics methods in biology in last decades enabled studying of these features even in elusive organisms. The present dissertation thesis is focused on studying three species of mole-rats from mesic tropical Africa, i.e. the region where the whole family is understudied. The first one is the silvery mole-rat, the solitary species inhabiting large distribution area in eastern Africa and in this thesis I deal with the genetic structure of this species at various levels. The phylogeographical analysis revealed that although there is an apparent geographic structure among genetic lineages based on mitochondrial markers, the nuclear markers suggest the existence of gene flow between these lineages. During the study pointed to the mating system of this species, the multiple paternity was revealed and genetic data suggested that the males are moving aboveground when searching for females and they are able to reach several females. The giant mole-rat is another studied species and I focused to its mating system. The results show the monogamous pairing between unrelated animals. Furthermore, single females (sisters of breeding female) in distant parts of the burrow system were found, most probably waiting for their own breeding opportunities. The third studied species is the Ansell´s mole-rat, in which I focused mainly on the mating system and the level of extra-pair mating, but also on the migration of animals between individual family groups. Although there is relatively high breeding male turnover, the extra-pair mating is rare and the migration between family groups is not very frequent.
