Shrinking cities phenomenon

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá fenoménem shrinking cities, který je charakteristický významným populačním a ekonomickým poklesem. Pozornost je věnována především příčinnám vzniku těchto míst ve 20. století a jejich doprovodným jevům, jakými jsou deindustrializace, suburbanizace, společenská trasformace, demografická změna a další významné faktory. Všímá si historického vývoje těchto měst především v americkém regionu Rust Belt, který je znám jako bývalé industriální centrum USA a v Německu ve spolkové republice Sasko, která byla silně poznamenána postsocialistickým přechodem. V závěru jsou naznačena některá řešení, například right-sizing model a smart shrinkage, a alternativy budoucí podoby měst.

Abstract:

The thesis is about shrinking cities phenomenon, which is characterized by significant population and economic decline. Attention is paid to the causes of these places in the 20th century and their accompanying phenomenon such as deindustrialization, suburbanization, transformations of society, demographic change and other significant factors. It takes notice of historical development of these cities, especially Rust Belt in American region, which has been known for the industrial center in the USA, and the Federal Republic of Saxony in Germany which was strongly influenced by post-communist transition. At the end some solutions are proposed, for example teh right-sizing model and the smart shrinkage, and there are some alternatives to the future shape of cities.
