On PKI Usability in Grids

Abstract:

Myšlenka infrastruktur veřejných klíčů (Public Key Infrastructures -- PKI) rozvíjí mechanismy asymetrické kryptografie a umožňuje vytvořit škálovatelné bezpečnostní protokoly vhodné pro distribuované systémy. V prostředí rozsáhlých infrastruktur, např. gridů, se ovšem objevují nedostatky současných PKI, které komplikují jejich hladké využití. Práce se zaměřuje na aspekty použitelnosti PKI v gridech, protože pozitivní přijetí bezpečnostních opatření ze strany uživatelů má pozitivní vliv na celkovou bezpečnost. Práce zdůrazňuje potřebu zavedení principu skryté bezpečnosti v oblasti gridů, která umožní odstínit uživatele od složitosti bezpečnostních mechanismů, takže s nimi uživatelé nepřijdou přímo do styku. Tento princip sice znamená zvýšenou zátěž na straně poskytovatelů služeb, ale přináší zlepšení celkové bezpečnosti. Zvýšení použitelnosti PKI v gridech je ukázáno na konkrétních oblastech správy uživatelských přihlašovacích údajů. Vedle toho práce ukazuje i další scénáře, kde PKI přispěla ke zvýšené bezpečnosti nebo použitelnosti aplikací v distribuovaných systémech.

Abstract:

The concept of Public Key Infrastructures (PKIs) was introduced to complement mechanisms based on asymmetric cryptography to provide scalable security protocols suitable for distributed systems. However, utilization of PKIs in really large-scale infrastructures like grids revealed various shortcomings of contemporary PKIs that complicate smooth utilization of the technology. This work focuses on the usability issues of PKI in grids since positive users' experience with security precautions is crucial for overall security. The thesis emphasizes the need to introduce the notion of transparent security in grids, which help hide the complexity of security mechanism so that users do need to interact with them. Even though the principle brings increased load on the side of providers of grid systems, we argue that the overall security is improved. Improvements of usability of grid PKI are demonstrated on particular areas that relate to management of user credentials. In addition to that, other scenarios are shown, where PKI contributed to improved usability or security of applications in distributed systems.
