Evaluating the Role of Trade in Economic Growth: A Study of the Republic of Georgia

Abstract:

This diploma thesis investigates the role of trade in the economic growth of the Republic of Georgia, focusing on variations in foreign trade and economic progress under different governments from 1996 to 2023. The study employed a linear regression model with five independent variables, including foreign trade-related factors such as FDI, trade balance, exchange rate, and trade openness. Results revealed that the exchange rate and unemployment rate significantly influenced economic growth, while trade openness was only marginally significant at the 10% level. The research also analyzed foreign trade developments in Georgia's post-independence era, highlighting dynamic shifts, particularly after the Rose Revolution, which saw increased imports, exports, and foreign investments. Successive governments, including Saakashvili’s administration and the Georgian Dream, exhibited continuity in trade policies, though economic performance under the Georgian Dream eventually deteriorated, especially regarding exchange rate stability. Future research could explore alternative trade variables or methodologies.
