The correlation between social media use and measure of psychological well-being in young adults

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá souvislostmi mezi používáním sociálních sítí a psychologickou osobní pohodou u české populace mladých dospělých. Teoretická část představuje problematiku aktivity na sociálních médiích z hlediska intenzity jejich používání, konkrétních činností a motivace. Rozebírá také koncept psychologické osobní pohody. Nakonec uvádí přehled studií, které tyto dvě oblasti propojují. Empirická část představuje průzkum vzájemných vztahů mezi popsanými proměnnými. Výzkum představuje kvantitativní korelační studii. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 119 respondentů. Sběr dat proběhl online za využití metod Motivations for Social Media Use Scale MSMU, Scale of Motives for Using Social Networking Sites SMU-SNS, Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scales PWB a Big Five Inventory BFI-10. Byla zjištěna souvislost mezi aktivitou na sociálních sítích a psychologickou osobní pohodou. Nižší osobní pohoda byla spojena s delší dobou strávenou na sociálních médiích, vyšším počtem využívaných platforem, pasivní činností jako je například hraní her, sledování videí či procházení příspěvků druhých, dále s navazováním nových přátelství a hledáním ideálního vzhledu. S vyšší osobní pohodou se pojilo pouze psaní si s přáteli, konkrétně v oblasti pozitivních vztahů.

Abstract:

The master's thesis examines the relationship between the use of social media and psychological well-being among the Czech population of young adults. The theoretical part presents the issue of social media activity in terms of the intensity of use, specific activities performed on social media and motivation. It also discusses the concept of psychological well-being. Finally, it provides an overview of studies that connects these two fields. The empirical part presents an investigation of mutual relations between the described variables. The research is a quantitative correlational study. The research sample consisted of 119 respondents. Data collection took place online with using the Motivations for Social Media Use Scale MSMU, Scale of Motives for Using Social Networking Sites SMU-SNS, Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scales PWB and Big Five Inventory BFI-10. A relationship between social media activity and well-being was found. Lower well-being was associated with longer duration of social media use, a higher number of used platforms, passive usage such as playing games, watching videos, or following and monitoring others, and making new friendships and following appearance ideals. Only chatting with friends was associated with higher well-being, specifically in positive relationships.
