Integration of Ukrainian university students into student life in the Czech Republic during the war in Ukraine

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská diplomová práce se zabývá integrací ukrajinských studentů prvního ročníku na českých vysokých školách v období válečného konfliktu na Ukrajině. Cílem práce je popsat, jak se studenti integrovali mezi své spolužáky na vysokých školách, a jaké kroky k tomu tito studenti podnikli. Práce je standardně rozdělena na dvě části – teoretickou a empirickou. Teoretická část věnuje pozornost konceptuálnímu vymezení tématu – migrace, integrace, akce od Českého státu a dalších subjektů na podporů integrace ukrajinských běženců, možné bariéry při integraci zahraničních studentů-běženců. V empirické části práce je popsána metodologie a jsou zde interpretovány výsledky výzkumu, který byl proveden skrze polostrukturované hloubkové rozhovory. Jedním z hlavních zjištění bylo, že respondenti sami omezovali své možnosti pro integraci odmítáním komunikace s Rusy a Bělorusy, kteří tvoří značnou část rusky mluvící komunity na univerzitě. Druhým z hlavních zjištění byl významný vliv vnímaného typu osobnosti na akce studentů pro svou integraci. Všechny tyto skutečnosti, a mnohé další, tvoří mnohostranný proces integrace ukrajinských studentů na univerzitách.

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis focuses on the integration of Ukrainian first-year students at Czech universities during the period of the war conflict in Ukraine. The aim of the thesis is to describe how students integrated among their classmates at universities and what steps these students took towards integration. The thesis is conventionally divided into two parts - theoretical and empirical. The theoretical part pays attention to the conceptual definition of the topic - migration, integration, actions from the Czech state and other entities to support the integration of Ukrainian refugees, possible barriers to the integration of foreign refugee students. The empirical part of the thesis describes the methodology and interprets the results of the research, which was conducted through semi-structured in-depth interviews. One of the main findings was that respondents themselves limited their integration opportunities by refusing to communicate with Russians and Belarusians, who constitute a significant part of the Russian speaking community at the university. Another main finding was the significant influence of perceived personality type on students' actions for their integration. All these findings, and many others, form a multifaceted process of integrating Ukrainian students at universities.
