Motivation of Czech and Slovak students towards a vegetarian diet

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá motivací českých studentů a slovenských studentů ve věku 19-28 let k vegetariánské stravě. Součástí výzkumu jsou i studenti jiných národností – ukrajinská a rumunská. Cílem je odhalit, jaká je u studentů nejčastější motivace k vegetariánství. Tato práce se také zabývá mezilidskými vztahy vegetariánů a dopady vegetariánství na vztahy. Další zkoumanou složkou je i životní styl vegetariánů. Diplomová práce je rozčleněna na část teoretickou a část analytickou. Při přípravě teoretické části byly využity relevantní zdroje a systematická literární rešerše, která posloužila pro vytvoření teoretického rámce. Analytická část obsahuje výsledky vlastního výzkumu a také výsledky systematické literární rešerše. Při realizaci výzkumu bylo provedeno dotazníkové šetření, které sloužilo jako předvýzkum pro získání vhodných informátorů pro další fázi výzkumu, tedy pro polostrukturované rozhovory. Studenti, kteří dobrovolně souhlasili s participací na rozhovoru, zanechali v dotazníku svůj kontakt. Ti pak byli na základně náhodného výběru zahrnuti do výzkumného vzorku. Dotazníkového šetření se zúčastnilo 247 respondentů, z toho 40 vegetariánů a 16 studentů se zúčastnilo rozhovorů. Při analýze výsledků z dotazníkového šetření byla použita popisná statistika, konkrétně tedy analýza četnosti. Rozhovory byly analyzovány pomocí tematické analýzy. Díky výsledkům systematické literární rešerše bylo získáno 37 vědeckých odborných článků v časovém rozpětí 2017-2022, při čemž relevantních k tématu bylo celkem 10 vědeckých článků. Výsledky z rozhovorů potvrzují, že nejčastější motivací u studentů k vegetariánství je převážně motivace etická. Dále pak motivace environmentální a zdravotní. Bylo také zjištěno, že u studentů hraje roli více motivací, které je podporují v zahájení vegetariánství nebo v udržení si tohoto životního stylu. Před zahájením vegetariánské stravy se u některých studentů objevuje eliminace určitého typu masa už dříve. Životní styl vegetariánů je pozitivní, jelikož studenti se snaží pravidelně sportovat či mít dostatek pohybu. Dále také dbají na správnou psychohygienu a kvůli své stravě berou vitaminy a doplňky stravy, které považují za velmi důležité, jelikož si uvědomují rizika jejich stravování na jejich zdraví. Mezilidské vztahy vegetariánů jsou ovlivněny negativním i pozitivním způsobem zejména u rodiny, přátel a partnerů. Nejvíce dochází k ovlivnění v partnerských vztazích v oblasti stravovacích vzorců a výběru partnera.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the motivation of Czech and Slovak students aged 19-28 years to vegetarian diet. The research also includes students of other nationalities - Ukrainian and Romanian. The aim is to reveal what is the most common motivation for vegetarianism among students. This thesis also looks at the interpersonal relationships of vegetarians and the effects of vegetarianism on relationships. Lifestyle of vegetarians is another component investigated. The thesis is divided into a theoretical part and an analytical part. In preparing the theoretical part, relevant sources and a systematic literature search were used to develop the theoretical framework. The analytical part contains the results of the own research as well as the results of the systematic literature search. In conducting the research, a questionnaire survey was conducted as a pre-survey to obtain suitable informants for the next stage of the research, i.e. semi-structured interviews. Students who voluntarily agreed to participate in the interview left their contact details in the questionnaire. They were then included in the research sample on a random sampling basis. A total of 247 respondents participated in the questionnaire survey, of which 40 were vegetarians and 16 students participated in the interviews. Descriptive statistics, specifically frequency analysis, was used to analyse the results from the questionnaire survey. The interviews were analysed using thematic analysis. Through the results of the systematic literature search, 37 scientific articles were obtained in the time span of 2017-2022, with a total of 10 scientific articles relevant to the topic. The results from the interviews confirm that the most common motivation among students for vegetarianism is mainly ethical motivation. Then environmental and health motivations. It was also found that multiple motivations play a role in encouraging students to start vegetarianism or to maintain this lifestyle. Elimination of certain types of meat occurs earlier in some students before starting a vegetarian diet. The lifestyle of vegetarians is positive, as students try to do sports or get enough exercise regularly. They also take care of good psycho-hygiene and, because of their diet, take vitamins and supplements, which they consider very important as they are aware of the risks of their diet on their health. The interpersonal relationships of vegetarians are affected in both negative and positive ways especially with family, friends and partners. The most affected are in partner relationships. Most of the influence in partner relationships is in the area of eating patterns and choice of partner.
