Increasing the level of student?s knowledge via adaptive testing

Abstract:

One of the ways to improve students? knowledge of mathematics is constant repetition and practice. Even Komenský claimed that ?repetition is the mother of wisdom?, an idea that was revolutionary at the time. The use of an adaptive testing system would contribute to the effectiveness and gradual improvement of students? knowledge. The goal of my dissertation is to propose a theoretical system of adaptive testing and electronic testing, test this system in practice and find out whether this form helps improve the level of knowledge or not. The entire process was divided into six phases: analyse types of classification of testing tasks and questions; propose an algorithm of adaptive electronic repetition with tutorial; propose an algorithm of adaptive electronic testing; for the purpose of the experiment, propose and create a new classification of testing tasks and questions related to a particular study material for the ninth grade of elementary school; create the complete bank of testing tasks; realize the experiment. The first phase was aimed at the analysis of different ways of classification of testing tasks. Second and third phases contained the proposition of an adaptive electronic system. An algorithm for the repetition with tutorial educational mode and the self-testing educational mode was created. Adaptive rules were then derived from the algorithm. In the fourth phase, new classifications of testing tasks and questions were created that conformed to the principles of both electronic testing and adaptivity. The fifth phase began with the creation of the complete bank of tasks for the subject ?Mathematics for the Ninth Grade of Elementary School?. Part of every task is a reference to a particular study material and to the correct solving procedure with the correct result. The last phase contained the realization of the experiment which proved that the adaptive testing system contributes to the improvement of the level of knowledge.

Abstract:

Jedným so spôsobov, ako zlepšiť vedomosti a poznatky ţiakov v matematike, je neustále opakovanie a precvičovanie. Uţ Komenský predsa presadzoval na tú dobu revolučné prehlásenie ?opakovanie je matka múdrosti?. A práve vyuţitie adaptívneho testovacieho systému by prispelo k efektivite a postupnému zlepšovaniu vedomostí a znalostí. Cieľom mojej dizertačnej práce je teoreticky navrhnúť systém adaptívneho opakovania a elektronického testovania. Tento systém experimentálne otestovať v praxi a zistiť, či táto forma pomáha k zvyšovaniu úrovne vedomostí. Celý priebeh práce bol rozdelený do šiestich fáz: analyzovať typy klasifikácií testových úloh a otázok, navrhnúť algoritmus adaptívneho elektronického opakovania s konzultáciou, navrhnúť algoritmus adaptívneho elektronického testovania, pre experiment navrhnúť a vytvoriť novú klasifikáciu testových úloh a otázok s väzbou na príslušný učebný materiál pre deviate ročníky ZŠ, vytvoriť kompletnú banku testovacích zadaní, realizovať experiment. Prvá fáza bola zameraná na analyzovanie rôznych moţností triedenia testových úloh. V druhej a tretej fáze sa pristúpilo k návrhu adaptívneho elektronického systému. Bol vytvorený algoritmus pre reţim výuky opakovanie s konzultáciou a pre reţim výuky autotestovanie. Z algoritmov boli následne odvodené adaptívne pravidlá. Vo štvrtej fáze boli vytvorené nové klasifikácie testových úloh a otázok, ktoré spĺňali jednak princípy elektronického testovania a jednak princípy adaptívnosti. Piata fáza začala vytvorením kompletnej banky úloh a otázok pre predmet Matematika pre deviaty ročník ZŠ. Súčasťou kaţdej úlohy je i odkaz na konkrétnu študijnú oporu a správny postup riešenia so správnym výsledkom. Poslednou fázou bolo realizovanie experimentu, z ktorého vyplynulo, ţe adaptívny testovací systém prispieva k zvyšovaniu úrovne vedomostí.
