Interindividual differences in perception of space and maps.

Abstract:

Téma: V této dizertační práci bylo zpracováno interdisciplinární psychologicko-kartografické téma vnímání prostoru a map. V naší studii jsme se zaměřili na rozdíly ve vnímání alternativních metod kartografické vizualizace v kontextu kognitivního stylu uživatele. Představili jsme dva samostatné experimenty, které byly realizovány online v elektronickém prostředí na platformě MUTEP. V prvním experimentu se zabýváme problematikou reprezentace informací o lavinovém nebezpečí a jeho nejistotě. Byly srovnány dvě alternativní metody kartografické vizualizace (intrinsic a extrinsic metoda) ve vztahu k výkonům participantů v psychologickém testu kognitivního stylu resp. jeho globální a analytické dimenzi. Druhý experiment byl zaměřen na zkoumání vlivu grafického designu mapových symbolů na percepční strukturu. Sekundárním cílem experimentu bylo zkoumání vlivu kognitivního stylu resp. prostorové a předmětové představivosti na výkon u různých typů znakových sad. Experiment 1 – metody: Dva částečně modifikované experimenty byly postupně realizovány na různých populacích. V obou studiích byly použity stejné mapy lavinového rizika, částečně se ovšem se lišily v počtu jednotlivých položek a rovněž typu úloh. V prvním případě studenti geografie (N=72, věk 19-27) a v druhém studenti psychologie (N=62. věk 19-55) vyhledávali požadované hodnoty lavinového rizika a jeho nejistoty na mapách. V jiném typu úlohy interpretovali situaci reprezentovanou v mapě. Následně byla administrována variace na Navonův test hierarchických písmen. Experiment 1 – výsledky: V případě studentů geografie byly zjištěny signifikantní pozitivní korelace mezi výkony v subtestu lokálních písmen a v úlohách s intrinsic metodou kartografické vizualizace. Rovněž jsme zjistili signifikantní pozitivní korelace mezi výkony v subtestu globálních písmen a v úlohách s extrinsic metodou kartografické vizualizace. V případě studentů psychologie nebyly zjištěny žádné signifikantní korelace. Zároveň jsme zjistili, že cca. 80% studentů interpretovalo ve více komplexní úloze situaci správně v případě extrinsic metody, zatímco v případě intrinsic metody odpovědělo správně pouze 34% resp. 40%. Experiment 1 – závěry: Výsledky naznačují, že forma reprezentace ovlivňuje proces vnímání a interpretace informací. Rovněž existují preference jedinců odlišných kognitivních stylů pro různé typy metod kartografické vizualizace. Domníváme se, že absence vztahu mezi výkony v psychologickém a kartografickém testu v případě studentů psychologie lze vysvětlit jejich nižší mapovou gramotností resp. přílišnou obtížností kartografických úloh. Experiment 2 – metody: Na stejném topografickém podkladu byly prezentovány dva odlišné typy znakových sad (A a B), které se odlišovaly ve velikosti, barvě, struktuře, čistotou barvy jednotlivých znaků. Úkolem participantů (68 studentů geografie, věk 20-26) bylo nejprve vyhledat znaky na mapě a v následující úloze vyhledávali informace z topografického podkladu, kdy bodové znaky působily jako distraktory. Kognitivní styl participantů byl měřen pomocí QSIQ. Experiment 2 – výsledky: Participanti dosáhli signifikantně nižších reakčních časů v případě práce se znakovou sadou A a to v obou subtestech. Zároveň byla zjištěna negativní korelace mezi výkony v kartografických úlohách v případě sady A a kognitivním stylem - preferencí k prostorové představivosti. Experiment 2 – závěry: Primárním cílem studie bylo ověření zákonitostí gestalt na specifickém stimulačním materiálu. Abstract:

Objectives: The interdisciplinary psychological-cartographic issues of perception and cognition of geographic space and maps are elaborated in the PhD. thesis. Our study focuses on differences in the process of perception of alternative methods of cartographic visualization in the context of user’s cognitive style. There are two independent experiments introduced which were realized online in the electronic environment on the platform MuTeP. The first experiment concerns with the issue of representation of information about risk of avalanche, and its uncertainty. Two alternative methods of cartographic visualization are compared (intrinsic and extrinsic method) in relation to performance of participants in the psychological test of cognitive style resp. its wholistic and analytic dimension. The second experiment was focused on influence of graphic design of map symbols on perceptual structure. Secondary objective of the experiment was focused on exploring achievements on various symbol sets with regards to the cognitive style resp. spatial and object imagery. Experiment 1 – Methods: Two particularly modified experiments were realized successively on different populations. The same maps of risk of avalanche were used in both studies which differed in the number of presented items and also in the type of tasks. In the first case, the geography students (N=72, 19-27 years old) , and in the second case, the psychology students (N=62. 19-55 years old) searched for the required values of risk of avalanche and its uncertainty in the maps and in the other type of task they interpreted situation represented in the map. The variation of the Navon hierarchical test was administrated subsequently. Experiment 1 – Results: In the case of the cartography students, we found significant positive correlation between achievements in the local letter subtest, and in the tasks with intrinsic method of cartographic visualization. We also found out significant positive correlation between achievements in the global letter subtest and in the tasks with extrinsic method. No significant correlations were found in the case of psychology students. At the same time we found out that ca. 80% of students interpreted the situation in more complex task correctly by the use of extrinsic method and only 34%, resp. 40% answered correctly by the use of intrinsic map. Experiment 1 – Conclusion: The findings indicate that the form of representation influences the process of perception and interpretation of information. There exist also preferences between individuals with different cognitive styles for different methods of cartographic visualization. We suppose that the high level of difficulty of cartographic tasks in the case of psychology students resp. their lower level of cartographic literacy may explain the absence of the relationship between achievements in the psychological and cartographic test. Experiment 2 – Methods: Two different sets of map symbols were presented on identical topographic background. Each of the symbol sets (A and B) vary in size, color, structure, shades. At first participants (68 geography students, 20-26 year old) had to search for particular map symbols on the presented maps. Next task was to search for information of topographic background when map symbols were acting as distractors. Cognitive style of participants was measured by QSIQ. Experiment 2 – Results: The participants achieved significantly lower reaction times by use of symbol set A in both subtests. We found out also the significant negative correlation between achievements in the cartographic tasks symbols set A and preferences for spatial imagery. Experiment 2 – Conclusion: Primary objective of the study was to verify gestalt principle on specific stimulation material.
