Effects of settlement and land use on vegetation of suburban forests

Abstract:

Lidské osídlení a využívání krajiny významně proměňuje dochované přírodní prostředí, čímž ovlivňuje také existenci rostlinných druhů a diverzitu jimi utvářených společenstev. K nejvýraznějším dopadům dochází v neustále se rozrůstajících městských aglomeracích. Mezi nejzranitelnější patří lesní biotopy, jejichž mimoprodukční funkce se stávají v současné době klimatických změn ještě více důležitými. Na území města Brna a přilehlého venkova jsem zapsal 110 fytocenologických snímků acidofilních dubových a dubohabrových lesů, k nimž jsem doplnil vybrané druhové vlastnosti a krajinné charakteristiky. Pomocí zobecněných lineárních modelů a kanonické korespondenční analýzy jsem zjišťoval, jak jsou diverzita a druhové složení této vegetace ovlivněny strukturou okolní kulturní krajiny. Nejdůležitější determinantou byla urbanizace území, s níž klesala celková druhová bohatost, rostla intenzita disturbancí a přibývaly nepůvodní druhy. Střední rozloha lesů podmiňovala výskyt lesních specialistů a zároveň bránila potenciální expanzi nitrofytů. Řidší lesní porosty v okolí zemědělských ploch přispívaly k přežívání ohrožených druhů. Navzdory převládajícímu kyselému podloží rostlinnou diverzitu ovlivňovalo také v městských oblastech variabilní pH půdy. Druhové složení lesní vegetace bylo urbanizací nebo nevhodným lesním hospodařením změněno natolik, že zejména v případě doubrav téměř vůbec neodpovídalo fytocenologicky typickým porostům. Pro ochranu příměstských lesů nižších poloh je tudíž zásadní dostatečná rozloha, kontinuita lesního prostředí, omezení narušování a vzájemná propojenost přírodními biotopy. Jejich management by měl přitom výběrnou těžbou vést k prosvětlení, obnově bylinného podrostu, podpoře regenerace dubu a omezení plošné sukcese v mezofilní porosty.

Abstract:

Land use changes including urbanization greatly alter the extant nature, affecting the existence of plant species and the diversity of communities they form. Major impacts take place within constantly expanding urban agglomerations. Although their ecosystem services gain more importance at the present time of climate change, forests are among the most vulnerable biotopes. In the city of Brno, Czech Republic and the adjacent countryside, I surveyed 110 vegetation plots of acidophilous oak and oak-hornbeam forests, complemented by selected species traits and landscape characteristics. Using generalized linear models and canonical correspondence analysis, I studied how the vegetation’s diversity and species composition is affected by the structure of the surrounding cultural landscape. Urbanization was the most significant factor, decreasing the total species richness, while increasing both the disturbance severity and the proportion of introduced species. Medium forest area determined the presence of forest specialists and prevented the expansion of nitrophilous species. Open forest stands surrounded by agricultural areas contributed to the survival of threatened species. Despite the prevailing acid bedrock, the plant diversity was also affected by varying soil pH, typical of urban areas. Either urbanization or an inappropriate forest management altered the species composition to such an extent, it barely corresponded to the defined vegetation of namely oak forests. Therefore, an adequate area, forest continuity, disturbance limitation and interconnections by natural biotopes are crucial to the conservation of suburban forests in lower altitudes. Their management should selectively lead to more open stands, promote regeneration of herb layer and oak, and avoid large-area succession towards mesic vegetation.
