Abstract:

This work is to show a complexity and mind-map of one European firearm owner. Myself. It all started with years long debate with my wife, who would challenge me, “Why would you want to have a gun”? “How was it to work in the firearm industry” (because I did, actually). I was raised in a society, where firearms were a regular thing. Both within my family and friends which was doctors, hunters, law enforcement officers, sport-shooters, collectors or just enthusiasts. I come to realize how both cultural and generational differences shape relationship of different people to firearms. I decided to photograph them to get to know them better and to show who they are. All in their intimate environment and I was posing a set of questions to myself: Why do people have guns? Why do people in highly developed societies have guns? What drives them to obtain those objects? How does their background, the environment that shaped them, their childhood memories, or popular culture influence the desire and need for gun ownership? Or is it motivated by fear? But a fear of what...? Somewhere in the middle of the project I started to think about my own journey with guns, and how my approach to them has shifted over the years. Starting from a youthful fascination with ballistics, through being obsessed with the idea of owning a weapon myself, to an ambivalence resulting from events that happened later in my life up to a war in Ukraine in recent months. It took some time to collect these little memories, impressions of my personal life. Some of them trivial, some that changed me forever. While writing these stories, I realized how strange some of them seem now, years later.

Abstract:

Táto práca ukazuje zložitosť a myšlienkovú mapu jedného konkrétneho európskeho držiteľa zbrojného preukazu. Mňa. Všetko sa to začalo občasnými, roky trvajúcimi rozhovormi s mojou manželkou, ktorá sa ma pýtala “Prečo si tak veľmi chcel zbraň”? “Aké to bolo pracovať v zbrojnom priemysle”? Uvedomil som si, ako generačné a kultúrne rozdiely ovplyvňujú vzťah spoločnosti k zbraniam. Vyrastal som v prostredí, kde zbrane neboli tabu a bol som zvyknutý, že sa v mojom okolí vyskytujú a že ich vlastnia ľudia okolo mňa – policajti, doktori, športový strelci, zberatelia, poľovníci. V posledných rokoch som však začal cítiť konflikt medzi mojimi spomienkami z detstva a aktuálnou spoločenskou emóciou. Rozhodol som sa otvoriť môj svet spomienok prostredníctvom fotografického projektu a hľadať odpovede na nasledovné otázky: Prečo ľudia majú zbrane? Prečo ich vlastnia ľudia vo vysoko rozvinutých spoločnostiach? Čo ich motivuje vlastniť tieto predmety? Ako ich detstvo, spoločnosť, v ktorej vyrastali, pop-kultúra a film ovplyvnili ich potrebu mať zbraň? Alebo je tá túžba motivovaná strachom? Strachom z čoho...? Niekde v priebehu tohto projektu som začal uvažovať nad svojou vlastnou cestou k zbraniam a nad tým, ako sa vzťah k nim vplyvom rôznych udalostí v posledných rokoch zmenil. Od fascinácie balistikou z mladosti cez túžbu vlastniť zbraň až po ambivalenciu končiacu aktuálne prebiehajúcou vojnou na Ukrajine. Trvalo mi dlhý čas pozbierať drobné príbehy a spomienky z môjho života. Niektoré sú triviálne, iné sú také silné, že ma navždy zmenili. Po rokoch mi niektoré z nich pripadajú až zvláštne.
