NFT and their role and future at the art market

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou, jaká je současná pozice a budoucností NFT na trhu s uměním. Skládá se z dvou vzájemně propojených částí – teoretické rešerše a praktické části. Teoretická část poskytuje ucelený přehled o historickém kontextu digitálního umění, vzniku technologie blockchain včetně principů, na kterých funguje, a následném vzestupu NFT jako nového nástroje, který demokratizuje trh s uměním. Teoretická analýza se rovněž zabývá příležitostmi a výzvy, které NFT technologie představuje pro umělecké subjekty, stejně tak jako možnou budoucností. Teoretické poznatky jsou poté uplatněné v praktické části, ve které byl proveden kvalitativní výzkum prostřednictvím hloubkových rozhovorů s odborníky zabývající se NFT na trhu umění, kteří zastupují širokou škálu aktérů – sběratele, umělce a kurátory. Na základě sesbíraných dat je nadále provedená analýza, jejíž východiska jsou seskupené do témat s cílem pomoci odpovědět na výzkumnou otázku této práce: Jaká je současná role a budoucnost NFT na trhu umění.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the question of the current position and future of NFT in the art market. It consists of two interconnected parts - a theoretical research and a practical part. The theoretical part provides a comprehensive overview of the historical context of digital art, the emergence of blockchain technology including the principles on which it operates, and the subsequent rise of NFT as a new tool that democratizes the art market. The theoretical analysis also examines the opportunities and challenges that NFT technology presents for arts entities, as well as possible futures. The theoretical insights are then applied in the practical part, in which qualitative research was conducted through in-depth interviews with experts dealing with NFT in the art market, representing a wide range of actors – collectors, artists and curators. Based on the data collected, the analysis that follows is grouped into themes to help answer the research question of this thesis: what is the current role and future of NFT in the art market.
