Politeness Theory Project: The Remains of the Day and Twelfth Night

Abstract:

The thesis concerns itself with analysis of the novel The Remains of the Day written by the Japanese novelist Kazuo Ishiguro and the play Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. The analysis is achieved through the lens of the Politeness Theory which was introduced by Penelope Brown and Stephen Levinson. The central theme of the theory is the concept of face and its effect on our daily social encounters. In the thesis I study the main character of the novel The Remains of the Day, the butler Stevens, and compare him to Malvolio from The Twelfth Night.

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou knihy Soumrak dne od japonského spisovatele Kazua Ishigura a dramatu Večer tříkrálový od Williama Shakespeara. K analýze je použita tzv. Politeness Theory, jejímiž autory jsou Penelope Brown a Stephen Levinson. Jejím ustředním motivem je koncept tzv. Face a jeho ovlivňování naší každodenní mezilidské interakce. V práci se zabývám studiem hlavní postavy Soumraku dne, majordomem Stevensem, a jeho srovnáním s Malvoliem ze hry Večer tříkrálový.
