Phonaesthetic Perceptions of Native and Non-Native Accents of English Made by Musicians and Non-Musicians

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá tím, jak hudebníci a (studenti konzervatoře) a nehudebníci (studenti gymnázia) vnímají různé přízvuky angličtiny a jak jim rozumí. Byly zahrnuty jak přízvuky rodilé (standardní britský přízvuk Received Pronunciation, standardní americký přízvuk General American, australská angličtina, skotská angličtina), tak i nerodilé (česká angličtina, ruská angličtina, francouzská angličtina, německá angličtina). Práce se skládá ze dvou částí – teoretické a praktické. Teoretická část (věnující se přízvukům obecně, fonetickým vlastnostem použitým ve výzkumu a vztahu mezi hudbou a jazykem) slouží jako podklad pro následující fonoestetický výzkum. Výzkum přinesl přinesl řadu relevantních výsledků, jako například že lidé s trénovaným hudebním sluchem jsou úspěšnější v identifikaci rodilých a nerodilých přízvuků angličtiny. Navíc jsou citlivější k rozdílům mezi přízvuky a přesvědčivě hodnotí fonoestetická kritéria týkající se jednotlivých přízvuků. Práce rovněž poskytuje návrhy na to, jakým způsobem může být výzkum v budoucnu rozšířen.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with how musicians (students of conservatoire) and non-musicians (students of grammar school) perceive and understand various accents of English – both native (Received Pronunciation, General American, Australian English, Scottish English) and non-native (Czech English, Russian English, French English, German English). The thesis consists of two sections – theoretical and practical. The theoretical section (dealing with accents in general, phonetic features of the accents used in the research and relationship between music and language) serves as a background for the following phonaesthetic research. The research has brought a large number of relevant results; for instance, people with a trained musical ear are more successful at identifying native and non-native accents of English. Furthermore, they are more sensitive to the differences between the accents and can persuasively assess phonaesthetic criteria referring to the individual accents. The thesis also provides suggestions for how the research can be extended in the future.
