Complimenting behaviour and compliment responses in American talk shows.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou komplimentů a reakcí na komplimenty v televizní talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, obzvláště v rozhovorech s celebritami. Cílem této práce je zjistit, jak hosté nebo moderátorka formulují komplimenty během talk show a stejně tak zjistit reakci, která přichází po vyřčení komplimentu. Pro analýzu byly vybrány 4 videa, na kterých jsou rozhovory s celebritami jako jsou Zoe Kravitz, Emily Blunt, Saoirse Ronan a Kate McKinnon. Hlavní pozornost je vedena na odpověď na pochvalu, zda je každý kompliment zaregistrován a jak je formulována odpověď. Analytická část odhalila, že ne každý kompliment obdržel odpověď, dva komplimenty byly dokonce ignorovány.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the analysis of complimenting behaviour and compliment responses in the Ellen DeGeneres show, specifically in the interviews with celebrities. The aim of this work is to ascertain how guests or show host tend to form compliments during talk show interviews as well as the reaction that follows the compliment. For the purpose of the analysis four videos with different celebrities were chosen. Among the four chosen celebrities are: Zoë Kravitz, Emily Blunt, Saoirse Ronan and Kate McKinnon. The main focus is on the response to the praise, whether every compliment is acknowledged and how the response is formulated. The analysis showed that not every compliment received a response, two were altogether ignored.
