Position and role of the House of Lords in the British political system

Abstract:

Sněmovna lordů je nedílnou součástí britského politického systému po celá staletí. Hlavním cílem mé práce je poukázat na to, jak se Sněmovna lordů během své historie měnila a jaká je její současná pozice a role v politickém systému Velké Británie. První část své práce věnuji stručné charakteristice samotných druhých komor, jejich významu, kritice a typologii. V další části se zaměřuji na historii Sněmovny lordů. Popisuji dějiny britské horní komory od jejích počátků po současnost. V následující kapitole se soustředím na proměny ve složení horní komory. Dále se zabývám proměnou funkcí horní komory. Závěrečná část mé práce je věnována stále otevřené debatě nad budoucím složení a pravomocích horní komory ve Velké Británii.

Abstract:

The House of Lords is an integral part of British political system for centuries. The main aim of my thesis is to show how the House of Lords during its history has changed and what is its current position and role in the political system of Great Britain. The first part of thesis is devoted to a brief characterization of the second chambers themselves, their significance, critique and typology. In the second section I focused on the history of the House of Lords. I wrote about the history of the British upper chamber from its beginnings to the present. In the following chapter I described the changes in the composition of the upper chamber. Further I focused on the transformation of the upper chamber functions. The last part of my thesis is devoted to the still open debate on the future composition and powers of the upper chamber in Great Britain.
