The impact of the financial crisis starting in 2007 on evolution of bank loans in selected countries

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o dopadech finanční krize z roku 2007 na vývoj bankovních úvěrů, dále představuje základní informace o finančních trzích a také poskytuje stručnou charakteristiku finanční krize jako součásti hospodářského cyklu. Jejím účelem je potvrdit hypotézu, že krize zpomalila tempo růstu bankovních úvěrů ve světě. K potvrzení hypotézy bylo vybráno jedenáct států z různých kontinentů. U vybraných států byla analyzována data švýcarské Bank for International Settlements, která poskytuje kvartální údaje o výši bankovních úvěrů. Výsledky pak vznikly na základě sledování trendů vývoje těchto hodnot. U osmi z jedenácti sledovaných států lze přímo potvrdit platnost hypotézy. Hodnoty sledování pro dvě země jsou neprůkazné a nelze jednoznačně rozhodnout o platnosti hypotézy a pouze u jednoho zkoumaného státu byla hypotéza vyvrácena. Zemí, která svými výsledky jde proti ostatním, je Čína. Na základě zjištěných údajů tak lze říci, že vypuknutí finanční krize mělo negativní dopad na vývoj finančních trhů téměř po celém světě a zásadně zpomalilo tempo růstu bankovních úvěrů.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the topic of the financial crisis starting in 2007 and its impact on evolution of bank loans. It presents the basic information about financial markets and also provides brief characteristics of financial crisis as a part of economic cycle. Its main purpose is to confirm the hypothesis that the crisis slowed down the growth of bank loans all over the world. The author chose eleven countries from different continents to confirm the hypothesis. The data from Swiss Bank for International Settlements were analyzed for selected countries. It provides the quarterly data about the amount of bank loans. The conclusions of the thesis were created based on the analysis of the data evolution trends. It proves the hypothesis for eight of eleven analyzed countries. For the two remaining countries the results are inconclusive, so it is not possible to either confirm or refuse the hypothesis. Only for one country the hypothesis was completely refused. It is China whose results do not follow the trends of other countries. Based on the results it is possible to take the following conclusion. The financial crisis had negative impact on evolution of the financial markets all over the world and significantly slowed down the growth of bank loans volume.
