Artificial Neural Network for Precipitation Nowcasting

Abstract:

Táto diplomová práca sa zaoberá problémom presnej predpovede počasia na najbližšie hodiny, tzv. nowcasting. Tento problém je riešený obvykle extrapoláciou hydrometeorologických radarových snímok, ktoré zachycujú prúdenie a vývoj zrážok. Budúca radarová snímka sa obvykle predikuje metódou optického toku alebo numerickým metódami predpovede počasia. Avšak tieto metódy nedokážu predikovať presné predpovede. V poslednej dobe, neurónové siete prekonali tradičné prístupy v mnoho komplexných problémoch a mohli by byť použité aj pre presnejšiu predpoveď vývoja zrážok. V tejto diplomovej práci analyzujeme problém zrážkového nowcastingu a poskytujeme stručný prehľad výskumu spojeného s týmto problémom. V implementačnej časti sme navrhli neurónovú sieť, ktorá je tvorená rekurentnými ConvLSTM vrstvami formovanými do štruktúry podobnej neurónovej sieti U-Net. Pre učenie časových závislosti sa využívajú ConvLSTM vrstvy a U-Net architektúra navyše poskytuje extrahovanie globálneho kontextu s presnou lokalizáciou. Naša neurónová sieť prekonala aktuálne používanú metódu predikcie Českým hydrometeorologickým úradom vo všetkých našich vyhodnoteniach.

Abstract:

Precipitation nowcasting problem tackles an accurate forecast for the near future by extrapolation of weather radar images. Prediction of the next frame that is capturing the movement and the development of rain is typically approached by techniques as numerical weather prediction or optical flow. Recently, artificial neural networks overcome traditional approaches in many tasks, such as image classification or language translation. Therefore, we believe that the capabilities of neural networks could be exploited for weather forecasting as well. In this thesis, we analyze the problem of precipitation nowcasting and provide an overview of related work. Ultimately, we propose a deep neural network Unitos4 that forms recurrent ConvLSTM layers into a structure similar to U-Net. It benefits from the ConvLSTM in capturing time dependencies between frames as well as from U-Net in extracting important features and global context along with precise localization. We show that Unitos4 outperforms the currently used method by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute in all our evaluations.
